Hey guys,

So long story short my engine is fucked. I need help on what to do next. Is it better to rebuild or get a replacement engine? Bare in mind that if i go down rebuilding it will be expensive but will last long where as the replacement engine might have wear and tear. Got about 3-4k to play with. Any help or ideas? Also no k20a2 as i wanna stay oem. Thanks

sorry to hear man , if the budget is 3 to 4k then just look for a replacement engine.

you could also go k24 if you wanted to go faster

Just fit a second hand K20a, examples can be found from 1400-2000.

Don’t really wanna go k24 tbh just want to stick to oem. Also I tried looking for replacement engine but none for sale atm as i’m looking for less than 85k mileage engine as shell is only on 76k

If you have a rod knock then fixing it most likely will require a new crankshaft because the journal will be scarred.
I don't know about how Junkyards are over there, but over here you can get lucky and get engines for cheap.
Finding a good crankshaft that's not brand new is pretty difficult. And brand new it will be over 1k

Looks like it spun a bearing but won’t know fully until I open the block

Yeah spun rod bearings suck. I usually just buy another engine because you'll also have to deal with cleaning the tiny metal shavings out.
also will need new oil pump. Typically the metal shavings get in places and change oil pump tolerances even if you manage to clean it out.
So reusing it will risk spinning another rod bearing.

Isn’t it cheaper to just get it cleaned professionally, replace some bits like oil pump, crank etc than to buy a whole used engine? As i’m after low mileage one which will cost 2-3k

As long as it still meets clearances for bearings. If it goes outside "used tolerances" than it will have to be replaced.
But keep in mind you are having an entire engine being torn apart on a whim.
I reused a head and had to clean out the vtec solenoid filter and there was TONS of little tiny glitter like shards.
I guess it also depends on if you turned it off and never drove it after hearing rod knock, maybe you can save it. But if anything goes wrong.
Bam you are right back where you started. I just like to play it safe... I do all the work myself but its a lot of work and lot of downtime.

Wow thats bare cheap thats the mileage i wanted as car has only done 76k before it went, so was looking for engine around that mileage. I’ve only found 86k engine at 2.2k. Is that too much?

Well my mate recons he can fix it and he’s on par with mechanical knowledge so i’m kind of 50/50 as i dont want this to happen again but then one of the honda specialist also said “it might be expensive to rebuild but will be a lot safer as if i were to buy a used engine you’ll never know what life it had before and just have to take the owner’s word

People seem to be playing the 'chancer' game for K20a's. I saw a few this year under the 2K mark.

Not sure why people have all of a sudden put them up for over 2K near the 2.5K mark.

2.2k is overpaying IMO.

Just to give my honest opinion after hearing that. That Crankshaft journal is going to be done. Also better check cylinder wall. And of course you will need new rod and rod cap.
