Car is laggy when put foot down

Hi guys dunno if this has been covered before. My car wasn‘t driven for a round 3 weeks as I was waiting for my starter motor to arrive got it done at Honda. After getting my car back my car felt abit off I realised later that when I put my foot down full throttle it‘s like it‘s not moving but usually upto the 3000RPM range feel really like laggy n no power. I took it on a good motorway run still didn‘t help, clutch was replaced around just under 1K miles ago. I only can describe it as boggy like when airbox ain‘t on properly have checked all the hoses n stuff everything is fine around the airbox. Has anybody had a similar problem or a fix?? Thanks in advance guys.

1) What exhaust does it have and mileage?
2) Is your CAT blocked?
3) Service history of the car?
4) Air filter blocked?

I'd personally rule out every obvious thing like blocks anywhere etc....

There is so many factors that on what it could be.

Skunk2 Mega power full exhaust. I dunno if it‘s blocked I don‘t know how to check. It‘s on around 130k miles it has good history valve clearances etc done. A local lad told me it could be the TPS? But I‘m no mechanic neither do I know what symptoms the TPS problem has.

Probably just a fuel filter. Are you able to engage VTEC or will it not get to that point? (5000rpm and beyond)

If it will, put a full tank of V Power in and find some decent quiet roads and try and engage VTEC a number of times. No harm in dropping in a bottle of STP fuel cleaner or better still, Fortes fuel cleaner and see if it helps.

Failing that if it's still playing up, you'll need to take it to a garage as it could well be a sensor issue such as your TPS or an O2 Sensor. May need a new set of spark plugs too.

Has your engine management light come on at all?

Thanks mate. Yeah it still engages in vtec but if you half throttle it when you full throttle the noise is there but can feel trapped power like the cars not moving. I have always used vpower. I might try the fuel cleaner first then just get a set of spark plugs and TPS as well as clean my tegiwa box n filter if that don‘t work then I guess I have no choice to try the fuel filter and then o2 sensor. It really is annoying

IACV is also another one that tends to go on these cars. I'd just get it into a decent garage. Where in the UK are you based? Try and get it to an independent Honda specialist. I recommend VTEC Direct highly as Ben is excellent. He's based in Winsford in Cheshire but there are plenty of others across the UK. Start with cheap bits first fuel filter, plugs etc before blowing money on sensors. Before you do that get it into a garage first and have it looked at.

Cheers for the advice mate. Just cleaned my air filter today was quite grimey waiting for it to dry then apply the oil take it for a drive in the afternoon. Got some spark plugs too which will be checked over n fitted if need be. Once these are out the way I will try a tps sensor as typer specialist said it sounds like it‘s a failing tps so gonna get it booked in asap. Lastly will be o2 sensor il have them check that too.

No worries man, I'm sure it won't be anything serious!

Hi

When mine was 'boggy' at lower revs like you describe it turned out to be the primary o2 sensor.

You can test the TPS pretty easily with a multi meter btw.

How did you know it was o2 sensor? Also I wouldn‘t have a clue how to check it lol not really that hands on. Is there a way to also check o2 sensor?

Hey. Sorry for the belated response. I just took a punt on the o2 sensor - after swapping out cheaper bits I figured it's such a key part of the engine management that it was worth chancing £100 or whatever to rule it out. It paid off - wasn't throwing a code but was definitely the problem. May or may not be the cause of your issue I guess you've just got to tick things off in order if you've not got much to go on.

Cheers

No worries mate thanks for the input. I have changed tps feels fine now but i don‘t know if it‘s just in my head I think I can feel it sometimes lol cars pulling as normal doesn‘t feel laggy but if I was in 4th put full throttle it feels abit strangled I know they don‘t have torque but it supposed to be smoother. Anyhow I think it could possibly be something to do with my ecu I was told it‘s a piggyback so could be something to do with that maybe. Not throwing up any codes otherwise.

Mines is the exact same at the moment. Really bogging down until around the 3000rpm mark then it picks up a bit. IAVC valve seems to be moving freely. I suspect it's the o2 sensor aswell on mine however wasn't going to chance it with being £150.no faults showing on the code reader either.

Any help appreciated

I know the feeling mate it could well be the o2 sensor but I haven‘t got round to sourcing one out yet. I bought myself a daily so not been driving the teg much. I thought mine could have been to do with ecu as well? It‘s running piggyback ecu. It‘s annoying because it‘s just happened out the blue after the was parked up for a few days n got the starter motor fitted before that was fine.

I was the same... Changed all the tyres then happened when I was driving home. I'm going to take a punt on the o2 sensor as although I don't have the EML on, everything else seems to be pointing towards that going by other posts.

Well I just changed my primary o2 sensor and although it feels a little bit better between 1500-2000rpm, it's still bogging down. When I put the foot down past 3k and leave it for a bit, it drives fine for a little while below but then goes back to being boggy. Maybe the cat is clogged? Doesn't sound too healthy either when foot is flat when it is struggling so need to check that out aswell

It‘s so annoying. I really don‘t know what it could be. I was thinking the cat too but I got a straight through skunk2 system so no cat lol. I change my TPS to a proper Acuity one. Too me it feels like something is blocked n causing it to struggle at low rpm, already cleaned my tegiwa box properly. I‘m starting to think for me it could be something to do with my ecu? As I‘m running piggyback but even then with or without piggyback ecu people have reported the problem. Lastly may be a possibility of a dodgy fuel pump another person said there problem went away after replacing the fuel pump n filter. I dunno what I‘m gonna do next but I‘m gonna leave it for now as I‘ve got a daily for this crap weather.

Bit of an update on mine. Since changed the primary 02 sensor, changed oil, filter and spark plugs. Check the fuel pump for any obvious signs but nothing. Still the same. Anyway was driving home from work tonight and through the town I hear the air intake start to hiss like it's breathing, then the car starts kangarooing. After a Rev, it stops. I'm guessing TPS as it seems to be OK below 15% throttle. Anymore and it just completely bogs down. Need to get a test meter onto it.

Hmm strange. What ever u do tho don‘t get the cheap China TPS they fail so quick. Best is genuine Honda if u can locate one as they only usually available with the whole throttle body or go with the Acuity Hall effect TPS u can find online I picked mine up from tegiwa.
