i may be a little thick being a newbie lol but.....

i have a cd/dvd player built in satnav, it has an AUX button but theres nowhere to plug this in, am i missing something?

Yup, look at the back of the unit.

as above should be on the back you may pass the jack cable on the front from the bottom where the cup holders are
