Flicking speedo? booked in at a garage.

My speedo has gradually got worse and is now jumping constantly, rev needle is fine and so is the millage, ive booked it in at a local import specialist, £50 diagnostic test etc, is there anything you can recommend i do to prevent getting ripped off? or inofrmation to arm myself before i send my car in. Ive seen you can but the converter for £40 is this easy to fit and install properly

sounds like the converter to me, another one.
yep its not hard, i would guess they should charge about 1 hour labour to fit the new converter.
remove OEM airbox, locate old converter fit new, its a splice wire job but it is only 3 in and 3 out so it ain't hard.

there seems to be a few converters going bad recently, i wonder if a bad batch came in,
i fitted mine Aug 04, and touch wood it has been as good as gold. i put mine a bit away from the sensor connection so it sits on top of the gearbox islolated from the heat and well wrapped to prevent any water ingress.

hope you get it sorted, my old GTiR used to do it at all the wrong times!

it turns out via diagnostics that the speed sensor has gone? could this mean the coverter or not.

Mine was the converter. I would suggest fitting a new converter as the speed sensor is a tad more expensive and see if that works!

somebody will correct me if i am wrong but the speed sensor feeds into the ECU and i thought it would affect more than your flickering speedo.
the easy way i suppose would be to take the convertor out, ie disconnect it totally and then see what the speedo does, if it is the same then it is the sensor, if ok then it is the convertor, my money would be on the convertor.
