Hi Andre
I believe Jonster and Herts62 had theirs done.
Although this isnt DC5 but I went on Andy's CTR who won the free upgrade, the performance improvement was very noticable. Theres more torque before VTEC so therefore the 'kick-in' is not noticable anymore as power is a lot more smoother thus making overtaking more easy without having to downshift.

Hi Guys,

Yep, I had my car's ECU re-mapped by Doug from Hondata during his current visit. As soon as the work was done I noticed that the engine was noticeably more torquey across the whole rev range and the trottle response had improved. I was with Doug and MJ Type-R at Abbey MotorSport where my DC5 was rolling road tested. Apart from the general torque increase, the main power increase was across the mid range. VTEC kicks in mildly at around 5000 but the main power kick still happens at 6000. I'm still running a stock in-take (apart from the Spoon filter) so we noticed it's holding back the performance. Peak power was around 206BHP (at the wheels). As an experiment Doug disconnected the pipe between the filter and the intake. Peak power, then went up to 215BHP. I'm working on making my own ramair CAI on the front grill to help improve the intake. I might make the Hondata modification to the stock box too.

I must emphasise one important point Doug makes, that peak power is not everything and the map is not set accordingly. The map is set to give you the best performance in the rev range we use most of the time and not at 8000+ revs.

On the road, the engine feels transformed. 6th gear pulls like 5th gear. 3rd gear is astonishing. Idling from cold is fine and the car now achieves 35MPG.

All-in-all, I would highly recommend the Hondata ECU upgrade. Why pay for a Mugen (£700+) upgrade when you can achieve a better ECU map with Hondata.

Thanks, Doug, for great work. I can't wait to test out the car to the fullest at Goodwood on Monday 6th.

Ditto to everything Jonster wrote and i can't wait for the Jap meet at Santa Pod on the 12th.
Thank you very much Doug and keep up the good work.

Are you sure young Jonster?

The only reason that I ask is that I know only too well how easily the senses are duped once money is involved.

Knowing you to be a very analytical sort of chap, please tell me how you arrived at 206 bhp at the wheels.

Did you do a 'before and after 'on the same dyno?

If so I will willingly pay for the print outs and proper money too!

Regards

Hi Richard,

The only Dyno that I've ever done was at Abbey all on the same day using a Dynapack connected directly to the wheel hubs (hence more accurate). Senses were fairly level headed since I had rough idea what to expect on the dyno charts from Hondata website.

If I remember corectly Doug did the first run using a stock ECU and then he tested with my re-mapped ECU. The most significant power changes are seen at 6500 rpm where stock power was 150BHP and Hondata power was 190BHP. Similarly stock torque jumps from 118 ft/lb to 155 ft/lb at the same revs. The torque is generally up by a minimum of 10 ft/lb and a maximum of 37 ft/lb at best.

I finally had a chance to test the results of all my mods since my car was driven stock at Castle Combe when I went to Goodwood yesterday. I felt pretty unstoppable. I started off in the intermediate group and managed to pass everything including a well driven TVR Griffith 500. I then change to the advanced group where I managed to escape various beasts including a current M3, a Fomula Ford and suprisingly all Caterfields. Still got nailed by a track prepared 911 GT2 though :) Suffice to say, the car felt incredible and suprised me when I was keeping up with a 400BHP 300ZX on the straight.

I'm happy to let you have a try of my Hondata ECU next time I'm down Castle Combe so you can see for yourself. I send you copy of the Dyno chart in the post if you want too?

I hope you can help me with something. I'm interested in getting a set of Team Dynamic ProRace 1 15s like you run on your DC5. Can you tell me what offset you use? Did they fit straight on without having to modify the Brembo calipers? I have tried to order Pro Race 2 16s but DT don't seem bothered about making them for me. I was intending to by them with a 45 offset but was wondering what the effect would be considering the stock wheels are 60 offset. I'd be interested to know what you think the difference with have.

Regards,

Jon

Hadean,

If the engine can breathe better you will always get gains. The air filter needs to filter out impurities and hence will slow the air down. This was bypassed on the last Dyno that produced the 215BHP peak power. The best solution is to use the best free-flowing filter available and provide it with ram-air feed. The GruppeM seems to be the best at the moment, which offers a ram-air bonnet scoop, but not many people want to chop out part of their cars to fit it in. I'm more concerned by water exposure during rain. I'm not prepared to pay that much either (600+ quid).

Cheers,

Jonster

Thanks for that Jonster, Please scan me some dynos.

Sorry to be so slow in responding but things have been a bit hectic.

I am intrigued by the power increase of 9bhp for only £300!Not to mention the mid range improvement.

I will be back in touch when I can see your dyno sheets.

Thanks for that

RW
PS. DC5 is now sold but look out for the new 'project'

I was just curious but do you guys have the ability to buy intakes? such as CAI and SRI? I have heard of some places even here in the USA where intakes are illegal.

Hondata is a very good mod to go with. But later down the road if you want more power you may want to look into the Toda engine kit (cams, valve springs, ecu flash) that cost $2400.oo US dollars or you can get the Hytech kit which includes (cams, pistons, valve springs, ecu, header, rings) which cost $9000.00 us dollars. These cost alot but are well worth it in the end.
