I have an old pc which came with usb1 but runs xp pro.

if i fit a usb 2 card in one of the empty bays on the rear will i then get usb2 or does it depend on the motherboard too?

if not can i fit a firewire card instead (old type fw400 with the big plug)

our ipods are full of music and it takes up so much space on laptops thought i'd use the old pc just for that but its so bleedin slow to upload anything thought i might try an upgrade.

Yes that will work, you shouldn't have problems with either usb2 or fw400.
