Selling a high miler - tips

Hi guys,

I‘m having no luck selling my car and not much interest. Daz had a similar situation and took the drastic measure of splitting the car for parts when there was nothing wrong with it.
What are your thoughts on buying a high mileage car i.e over 120,000 on the clock (kms or miles)?
Avoid avoid avoid or worth a look?
I‘m trying to sell mine with 148,000 on the clock and despite lowering the price it‘s still not budging.
I‘m at £6,200 price wise now which seems fair but if that‘s too high I can try lowering further.
My old ep3 was on 80,000 miles when I bought it and I kept it until 116,000 without issue so mileage doesn‘t bother me but maybe others are more reluctant when they see big miles.
Any tips on how to make a high mileage seem more positive?
Or tips on selling in general. My location is likely a factor as I‘m in Scottish Highlands 2 hours from Glasgow however with a car so unique I‘d expect people would be willing to travel.
Thanks!

It's a strange one, my friends old ep3 had 200k on it when he sold it , the new owner then did countless track days . I know miles are not a problem with these car but due to the fact high mileage cars struggle to sell I to bought low miles one . At 6200 it should sell easy for that man, I know this has been no help lol but it's somthing I've noticed too

Try eBay and gumtree at a realistic price and you should see more interests

Personally the only way I could afford a dc5 was to look for a cared for higher milage car. Yours looks good to me, location is a bit further but I flew to Edinburgh to buy mine off wingnuttz and I am still very happy with it.
Something that attracted me to wingnuttz car was that he had a detailed build thread which helped make me feel confident that he had looked after it...
But sorry don't really know what to suggest, they are quite specialist cars I suppose and lots of owners seem to want a fresh one from Japan and are willing to pay big bucks!

Maybe reduce price a little more and gumtree etc will probably get more interest, although I find it is mainly people wanting to swap for an astra of some description!

If you break it might be more annoying having to post parts all around the country!

Good luck with sale!

I'd recommend putting it in miles for starters in the ad. Most buyers aren't used to seeing cars advertised in KM, so I would imagine they are often put off by the sheer size of the number even though it's in KM. I for one am not a big fan of buying high mileage cars either, but only because of the problem you are having - it's very difficult to get a good resale on it.

That being said, I think your location will definitely be playing a part too, I just sold mine (72k miles on her) and I had 3 enquiries which flopped because of travel cancellations, (and I'm smack bang in the middle of England!). In the end I still had to make a trip from Leicester to TGM to make the sale.

I think you'll have more luck on Gumtree/Ebay, I think it just needs a niche buyer (someone within reasonable distance of you, who wants a track car and isn't put off by mileage) and that person hasn't popped up on the forums.

Get it broke 😜

No in all honesty breaking mine has been stupidly stressful (not helped by the fact my mom had a massive heart attack a couple of days after I started it 😔)

If you are prepared to sit on parts you can make more money than you are selling yours for BUT like I said above it is massively stressful and I have personally made a couple of mistakes while doing it

I suppose if your willing to wait there will almost certainly be a buyer for it eventually, just remember the market for these cars is very small and most want low mileage fresh imports

Sorry to hear that mate. I think I‘ll keep mine whole as although I could split body and interior myself I wouldn‘t be able to do gearbox or engine so would need to pay a mechanic a good few hours labour to remove them.
I need a car as well and so I‘d more likely trade mine in at the end of the summer and accept I won‘t get much for it.
Thanks for the advice guys I‘ve amended my adverts and now have it on here, pistonheads and gumtree for £5995. Not much I can do about location but i will offer to meet in Glasgow which most people can reach within a days drive return.
I‘m tempted to buy my next car with around 100,000 miles as the bargaining power must lead to some good reductions at the point of buying, although it might be a problem selling on a few years down the line.

I'm currently in the market for a DC5, and looked at your ad. I don't think mileage has anything to do with it, as others have said. It's a Honda for f**ks sake! Just about run in now. However, there are a few little things that I think you could do fairly easily / cheaply that would present the car in a much better light (IMO of course!). PM me if you like. Oh, and I'd travel to the Highlands for the right car.
