Underbody Protection

Hey there fellow owners.

i recently had my car fully re-under sealed again and just want to share my experience with you lot.

Ill start with i don't know how many of you that are reading that have seen my DC5 build thread you would of seen, i was currently trying to clean up, treat and protect some of the areas of my car, i had done the arches, rear and front under the bumpers but in doing so noticed a few areas underneath my car that could use a bit of attention.

There are a few people on here that have done this themselves (and a great job they have done) but imo unless you have a ramp to get the kind of job that i deem a "Proper" job, doing outside your house, on axle stands with just the little knowledge of information found off google, its definitely a job i couldnt do my self.

So after hours on google, forums, searching there instantly became noticeable two types of people that will underseal your car, the first is the kind that charges minimal and will just throw some underseal on to cover up the patches (tbh i found most garages if asked would do this for a price anyway) but this is not what i was looking for. The second is the kind of garage that will clean treat and re underseal obviously for a much higher price.

I could only find a hand full of reputable specialist garages that could and would do the work to the level i required, next problem is out of the 6 i found 4 of them are up north and im based in surrey, south london so it did narrow it down to the two, again on google looking for reviews (customer reviews my i add).
eventually decided on Underbodyprotection.co.uk based not far from crawley.

Within the next couple of days gave them a ring and the guy who owns the company michael, was more than helpful, and we organised a time for him to take a look at the car on his ramp to discuss the work required. i explained it was a jap import and lowered again he was more than helpful and had no problems.
i wont give his address out on here if your interested after reading this check out the website. so on a late friday evening off i went to be fare to him i got lost and was probably an hour and a half late, But he waited around and didn't hold a grudge that i kept him waiting even tho it was only for a look and a quote.

First impressions was a bit off as you have to drive down a farm road and we all get that thought in are minds, "where the hell am i taking the teg too" lol. But after turning up micheal come out to meet me and showed me his workshop, now my impressions were wow so clean, if you ever visit you will understand when i say the impression you get was this is someone that either doesn't do any work lol or takes loads of care and pride in his work lol. He explained he does a lot of 4x4s and has done a few specialist imports so what i needed done wasn't a problem.

So we got the car up on the ramps and michael went round the hole underneath of the car and explained to me what he was looking at and what he would do. So far so good, he explained to me that it wasn't as bad as it looked and a lot of it was just surface rust, he had good knowledge of imports not specified to just Japanese either, i told him it was last under sealed from my knowledge in 2008 when it was imported. Now on to the quote....we spoke about the work that would be done and he quoted me (pm if you want to know), now this was a lot more than i was expecting and especially as i had done some of work. but he explained more than once i think he would NOT just throwing some underseal on.

He would be completely jet washing and cleaning the underneath of the car, removing trim panels, heat shields, front bumper and any thing else required, he would then mask and cover up areas, fully treat any areas of rust signs, then after it had dried two coats of high performance clear wax filling all areas and cavitys. he would need the car for about week, sounded good to me so i booked a date to get it done and off i went.

Few weeks later i received a phone call from him saying he was really busy, he apologized and said couldn't rush any work and wouldn't be able to do the work for at least another 3 weeks, this was then inconvenient for me so we rebooked for the end of january. i was disappointed to say the least but then i prefer someone that wont just simply rush my car in and out so the fact he was busy is only ever a good thing so the wait continued.

So the saturday just gone 31st of january 2015, i dropped my car off to the still very friendly michael, we had a chat for a good half hour, there was few things he recommend on my inspection, new tank strap ect, in the time i had been able to accumulate these things so handed them over plus a camera and the keys and off i went.

i received a call thursday evening saying my car was done and i arranged to pick it up on the friday, i gave him a time and he said he would leave it up on the ramps so that i could have a look at the work (always a good sign).

Ok first impressions now wooow walked into the still clean workshop and there was my car, i had another walk round and he explained what he had done, as i stated before i had already tried my hand at undersealing but this was just the kind of work i was after, it was clear he had taken care of my car and the underneath was now looking like a brand new fresh import, to say the least i was more than happy and impressed with the work plus he had also sorted a few issues and fitted the bits all included in the price.

i take a lot of care and pride in my integra, and couldn't think of anything worse than handing over the keys to someone that doesn't do the same. michaels work was fantastic, you could tell from the work and how he was explaining it, that he was someone that not just takes pride in his work but also believes in doing a job thats worth doing. the money and the wait was well worth it. The level of work was better than my expectations and if this is something you are after i highly recommend underbodyprotection.co.uk.

Thank you for taking the time to read this any questions pm me, im sure iv missed out a few things, keep an eye out for my build thread

Alex

Pictures.

he had taken over 80 photos so these are just a few, the two layers of clear coat would take on the plus side of 3 weeks to harden so once its dry i will post of some more pictures.

heres just one the day i picked it up.

Cheers

Thinking of doing this as well so thanks for posting details of a good company.

Would you mind sharing details of the other five companies you looked at especially the four you found up north?

Thanks

Cheers, as above these pictures don't do it justice, worth doing as IMO it can only add value or at least appeal if you was ever to come and sell.

No worrys mebz, just from memory there are quite a few

These might be wrong but

Jrclassics.co.uk
Waxoyltreatment.co.uk
Pristine-autos.co.uk.

There was a list of them but I can't find the paper I wrote them down lol. I was just typing all sorts of key words into Google and noting down what came up and if I liked the look of the website I would then search the company name with other key words like review, loads of info on other forums I think I even signed up to a few of the land rover and an old bmw owners site just to read reviews.

Worth the research, and don't limit your self to google. Just remember I think with this you pay for what you get and its somthing that takes a good few days/week to be done properly.
If I find my peice of paper il post up the rest of the company's I found.

Good to see someone else protecting the teg properly. Mine was even steam cleaned and "cooked" for a few days to make sure it was 100% clean and dry before sealing :D
