recently i gaev my computer to a mate (around 6 months ago) to fit a 200gb harddrive and install all the bits adn bobs for me, things have been fine until i now get a pop up from microsoft stating that i may have been a victim of counterfeiting and i need to purchase a new activation code or product key......

i have a kosher product key and need to reregister it, is there a way i cna do this without loosing my many gb worth of porn and various other important progs, files etc, or am i gonna have to re-install windows and loose everything?

This is due to a windows update microsoft released recently. like you said it basically tells you if your windows version is genuine or not.

you might get more info on microsoft.com about this.

You could always do a system restore to before the updates were installed and then turn off automatic updates.

It sounds as if he installed WinXp using a volume licence key and therefore your key would not work with the version of Windows already installed.

One way to remove the nag screen is to removed ALL permissions to the dll file that nag screen uses 8)

You have a PM

After 3 significant hardware changes, XP requires reactivation - I suffered from this myself last time I stuck a new GFX card in. As I had a kosher version but the keycode didn't work I went through the phone them up to activate the product process - no problems, very friendly and nice and easy. :)
