EDIT:This was posted to help kol_m post links into the topic above but it now looks a little out of place.Just so you know I'm not posting randomly

Go for a cold air intake type system. The K20 is very sensitive to temperature so an open pod filter in the engine bay may not be the best thing around for performance. Some jap tuners even prefer the stock box with the panels and ribs removed.

I second that.

The "Hondata Mod For Airbox" is supposed to work quite well and I'm still debating whether to go ahead with it.

Dude,
go for it. No regrets. I did it for a friend with a JDM EP3. This is what he said,"WOAH!!".

i read about the "airbox" mod too. seems to me that by doing so, u'd effectively have a "mugen" box since the filter element would have a more direct and abundant supply of "fresh" air. only thing is i'm uncomfortable with cutting any part of the air box. call me butter fingers, but i wouldn't wanna risk putting a hole where it doesn't belong......

I asked Jackson Racing which CAI set up they had the best results with and this was there reply.

We don't typically suggest using a CAI type system. We've found better results with just a short ram air filter-type setup. Cold air setups must be modified and, even once they are made-to-fit, the short ram with big filter seems to still work slightly better. Even the standard air box with a hi-flo filter is actually just as good or better.

If most Jap tuners stick to the stock box, I don't think they can be too far off the mark although I'm sure there are better systems out there like the mugen box and the GruppeM.

Short RAMs are no good for NA setup.
i beg differ in other examples, but i'll have to agree that this is the case for the DC5. the short ram will land ur intake element in the middle of nowhere to capitalize on any ram air effect and in a likely position to suck in the hot air near the exhaust manifold.

i've found that most of them actually went with the mugen box set up. if u think about it, there are distinctive flaws in the design of the stock airbox, like having a restrictive channel for drawing cold air and having the intake velocity slowed down by the huge "U turn" the air has to make in order to go back into the intake manifold. what were the guys at honda thinking? :?

im still unsure bout witch ribs that need to be cut, there are two parts in the stock air filter box.....witch one....the diagram from the website is not that clear on where to cut it

take off the top part of the air filter. u should see the air filter sitting in a compartment. the piece u need to cut is the the one separating the air filter from the resonating chamber. careful not to cut too low or u'll break into the bottom part of the box itself (yes, i finally DIYed the box. and dun ask me how i know it breaks if u cut too deep  ).

the "ribs" u are talking about shd be those surrounding the air filter on the stock box. just cut those out with a good pair of cutters. doesn't matter which rib u cut as long as u nip them all. the whole idea is to get a flat surface so that the "ribs" do not cause turbulence to the larger influx of air coming in. IMO, the effects r negligible but no harm in going the extra mile since u are at it already.

I found using a hacksaw to cut out the panel quite awkward so I did mine with a small angle grinder and then cleaned the edges up with glass paper it turned out a neat job and only took 20 minutes.

You can also use the angle grinder to clean up where you have cut the ribs off.
