A/C not working? Clutch not engaging?

Hi there,

Wasn't sure if this is the correct section but i'm sure a mod will move it if so!

I'll try cut a long story short!

Went to get my A/C re-gassed the other day due to the scorching weather to be told there was already gas in the system to which i thought to myself 'oh it must be low then.'

However, after the re gassing was finished, the garage turns on the air con to test the temperature, for nothing to be different. I was then told the clutch isn't engaging on the condenser...

He gave me a card for an A/C specialist but i though i'd give this a go myself first. However i am unsure where to begin!

has anybody had any problems with thier A/C before and what was the problem?

I look forward to your replies!

Kind regards,
Carl.

Yep I've had a similar experience just recently. My a/c was working but then when it got to 30c outside it wasn't very effective. I went to kwik fit and they used DC2 settings on the machine which has put 585g of gas in instead of 500 + 0 50. I got the car back and it worked brilliantly for about 10mins then stopped completely. Took it back and they said clutch had burnt out!

My theory is they over gassed it, theirs is that it clutch was on last legs and bringing compressor up to optimum pressure has seen it off. Anyway, long story short, I managed to get hold of a whole compressor and clutch assembly and they're going to swap the clutch over on the 10th aug!

Hope its not something simple like pressure switch like Mark said!!

If you've got kpro then you can check the clutch switch is working BTW. It has two sensors, one for AC fan and the other AC clutch. Unfortunately nothing in kpro on pressure switch which means its probably purely mechanical

It was also kwik-fit i went to but they didnt tell me what settings they gasses my car to?

unfortunately i dont have a Kpro but in the near future im looking at getting one.

is there any way to find out on the standard ECU?

I was also going to try and follow the supply through the circuit. I.E start with fuse (not sure on what fuse it exactly is so info on this would be great) and through to relay (again unsure of what relay this is within the fusebox). I was then going to short the relay with a paper clip which supplies the clutch signal and see if that engages. However, i dont have the info on this stuff, does anybody have a wiring diagram or some sort of haynes manual for the DC5 A/C system? If so I could then follow it through.

Go download a copy of the rsx manual. Ideally the Linked version as it's much easier to use.

I haven't time to post it all. Bit there's pages of diagnostic for the ac. Here's the juicy bits

I've just done this and it started the self test and then finished but no flashing lights so it thinks there's no problem with mine. It seems the tester is more electrical whereby I'm certain mine is a mechanical failure in the clutch

You can remove other possibilities with electrical tests.
Simple and fast way...if there is power to the ac compressor, and its not cutting in, its likely the compressor at fault.

Most systems will only feed the compressor if other conditions are met. So the pressure switch was happy with pressure etc. If the gas was too low, it shouldnt power the compressor, its a fail safe.

I will say, I was, and am busy, so didnt read through the tests :)
