Annoying rattle...

Yes, I've done a search but people seem to be coming up with numerous possibilities and in the hope I can explain the problem fuller, I hope to get to the root of the problem straight away...

I get a rattling noise as the revs pass up through 2,500 rpm and on the way back down again, and will rattle continuously if I sit at those revs. It will also do it whilst stationary, again at 2,500rpm.

I've had the bonnet open and had someone sit in the car holding it at the problem revs, I couldn't hear a thing whilst I was lent right over the top on the engine from both the front and the back of the engine bay, it was only when I put my head near the off side wheel I could begin to hear this horrendous racket! The noise is coming from only one side (os), very low down (underside of the car) and in line with the bulk head... any ideas chaps, it's driving me insane!

Thanks in advance!

Chris

Lower exhaust heatsheild, 95% sure. £100 to replace iirc or free to remove :D

Shouldnt have any adverse effects removing it according to TGM.

Hope that helps

I had a similar problem some time back. There is a heatshield around the bearing housing that supports the drive shaft. There are some wire looking bushes on it, and mine had worn and was causing the shield to rattle at certain revs. You can either get a whole new heatshield or do what I did, and take it off and squash it in a vice. This sorted mine out. HTH

Where can I get to this? Will a jack and a couple of axle stands suffice? Anybody got a picture of the underside of a DC5?

Can't arrow it in that pic as I can't see it. To give you an idea of where it is, look at the subframe (black bit going across the car) and the exhaust flex pipe (shiny bit above it) then the heatshield sits above this between the '2' part of the exhaust and the steering rack which is mounted to the bulkhead.

If it's the offside one then IIRC you can get to the bolt through the wheelarch - take the wheel off and look just in front and below the track rod for a 10mm black bolt facing the front of the car, and tighten it.

Right, I've sorted this out now, I took the car down the local tyre and exhaust place, I sat in my car as they put it in the air and held the car at the problem revs and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. My problem was as above, however they came up with there own method for fixing it, they put on a sleeve around the bolt to make it a tighter fit through the bush... it certainly done the trick, no more rattle!

I took a quick pic, it may help someone in the future... xthumbup

(A) Shows what was rattling
(B) shows the fixing point which was causing the problem

Hello Chris,

Was this under acceleration?? Its just that my car has started an annoying "knocking" noise mainly in 1st, 2nd & 3rd.

I wonder if I took that picture to the garage I use wonder if they did that to mine, would it stop the noise??

Anyone else got any ideas what it could be?? Sorry for not starting a new thread but after reading this I am hoping its the same thing.

Any help please guys and girls would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Ross

Hi mate,

To be honest, it sounds like you have a different problem. Mine was not a knocking noise, but a vibration. It happened at a certain revs whether you were in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th 6th, moving or stationary.

You say a knocking noise, is it high pitched tinny knocking or a dull thud knock?

You say only in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, is it still there in 4th, 5th etc... but just to a lesser extent?

Does it rear it's head mainly on applying the throttle or coming off the throttle?

Hello Mate,

Yeah its a dull thud noise, it only does it so far in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

It only does it when I am accelerating.

I know the teg's have a reputation of being a noisey car, but its a noise that sounds like it should not be there!

The car does still drive ok however....

Any help guys!

Depends. It reduces the engines movements so you get a lot more vibration into the cabin. One of these or a Torque dampener is essential if you run an aftermarket manifold, but not so if you're using standard.

Some like the siffer mounts saying that it gives a better feel, others hate it. It's a 2 min job once the car is in the air to see if the front one is gone.

Ask them to check the front engine mount. They should jack up the car and use a crow bar or similar to put pressure on the rubber bit within the mount to see if it is perished or not. I had mine checked at TGM and it's fine.

Hi all,

I have this exact same rattle. Got my mechanic to put it up on the ramp and he said the wire washers had worn and so the heatshield was rattling. Recommended that I get some new washers from honda and he'll stick them on.

Can I get these parts from Honda and will it fix it or has something else worn?

What is going to be the best way of fixing this quickly. Is it someone I can easily do myself or is it simpler with a ramp.

I can't quite make out in the photo on the previous page exactly what they have done, have they just added an extra washer?

Thanks in advance.

Matt.
