Could it be warn piston ring seals?

Is it normal for air to blow out of the oil filler cap when the engine is running? All my previous cars never did this, infact my civic VTi MB6 used to suck slightly. I wondered whether it could indicate to warn piston ring seals but I never get smoke from exhaust during engine under-run etc.

Any suggestions, just curious whether anyone else has this too and whether its normal on K20 or not?

Thanks

Why would you remove the oil cap with the engine running..?

It is normal yes but not normal as it should not be done!!

Not a wind up, its a serious question

If you google for these symptoms then you will find its a known test to check for a condition known as "blowby"

I just wanted to find out whether its normal behaviour on this series of engine.

Would be greatful if someone could just check theres and let me know.

Thanks

I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing a distinct smell of herring here...

If only it were that easy to tell, then nobody would ever need to perform a leak down test.

best thing t do is do a compression test on each cylinder
see if there is any difference between them I think normal is 170psi

You will do no harm removing the cap as the rocker cover has a breather on it anyhow. :)

OK some homework for you all,

investigate how the internal combustion engine works. I think you will find your answer.

in your searches find out what a PCV valve does

if you have blowby, the crank case will be getting pressurised massivly, usualll the dipstick will come out as all the cylinder pressure goes past the rings and into the sump, your car will usually run like a bag o shite if you have this.,
with the engine running the air coming out of the oil filler hole is massive and will smell often of fuel/exhaust gas,

normally any engine if running will produce some air as the pistons go down some air can sometimes return in the oilways, but more often in a 16v engine the air is produced by the cams rotating at speed and the valves going up and down, it is normal to have a light chuffing effect.
if you are concerned take it to a specialist, not back street garage or honda, they will just see a nice big bill.

Thanks Evo7.

The car runs perfectly, so I can't imagine much being wrong with it but given the volume of air coming out, it just didn't seem normal to me hence the post on the forum.

Think i'll just put this behind me and just closely monitor the engine. If I suspect its getting worse, I'll take your advise and have a specialist take a look.

Thanks for your advise :)

ps. would have been great if a selected few could just test their motors and let me know if they get the same sensation of air.

Would put my mind at rest, thanks again :)
