DC5 Engine Failure

My bottom end went a couple of weeks back, the car is still in dry dock awaiting new crank, bearings and oil pump.

Word is that another DC5 (Bristol way) and an S2000 had similar issues. I am just hoping I get my car back before the end of August. And yes, I am having to pay insurance while the car is off the road! :x

Had the car 3 months and driven 2K miles in it, totally gutted at the moment.

Jevo,

The root cause was oil starvation. Yes, the car was low on oil but not that low. My guess is that there was a fault with the oil pump which had a knock on effect on the bearings and crank.

Digging a little deeper I was astonished to find out that these engines are designed to drink up to 1litre of oil / 1000 miles!! My old scooby would do 10K and hardly drink a drop! unbelieveable!

Anyway, with a little luck she should be back on the road by the middle of next month. Still means that I am walking 2 miles to work every day rain or shine  Plus side - I am getting very fit!

Hi Rich,

Sorry to hear about your trouble m8  Hope its back soon for you

With having owned Honda's before, I already knew that the engines use oil, but one can use more than another :)

They also tend to use more when in Vtec, but thats the whole point of the engine

My advice is to check very frequently, when I had the S2k, I almost got into the routine of checking every time I went out in it at the start of the day, but it was a second car

Sorry about your bad luck, just hope other owners take note :?

I would recommend changing the oil every 3000, and minimum 6000 miles.

My old EK9 used to have an oil change before every trackday and 1 every 3000 miles, and used to check once a week minimum.

As said on the Honda board bad luck to both of you and hop your back on the road soon.

Perhaps worth considering dry sumping for track work for those that indulge  , the old DC2 had similar problems. Big £'s thou.

Car is now back after a hefty engine bay rebuild:

New crank, con rods, oil pump and bearings amongst other things. Cause was a drop in oil pressure which had a catastrophic knock on effect.

Hats off to the dealer - Brayley Honda in St. Albans, in particular Eric for all his help and hard work getting the car back on the road.

As a word of caution to everybody with JDM DC5s in the UK, check your warranties if you have them - dealers will only take a full UK Honda Care warranty.

Now I've got 2K very slow breaking-in miles

anyway... matt....you mentioned that dc2 had a similar oil drinking problem.... i thought engine oil was s'posed to stay in the sump...how come it can "disappear"?
cheers....

Well it is know for all K20 motors that in the intial break in (first 3000 miles) the car might consume oil badily so it is suggested you check your oil every time you put gas. I have been running Redline synthetic oil since the first oil change and have had no problems. My suggestions for everyone would be to check your oil every time you put gas. An extra 5 minutes at the gas station checking your oil can save you a few thousand dollars in repairs.
Good luck bro.

If they didnt change your pistons why the 2k running in :?

Unlucky 2f2f, order a set of new bearings before you destroy the crank.

What ever all these technical people in the know say i always stick to a semi synth 10w40 (OEM spec). Any one that seems to have had probs with engines B16, B18, K20 9/10 have been using so called GOOD expensive oil. Just because it costs allot doesnt mean its any good for these engines, its too thin.

IMO anyway, Dunx
