Everyone is talking about Jap classics from the 80s, 90s and 00s now because most other performance cars from this era ‘has been done’ and priced out from the average enthusiast, thanks partly to the investors and the collectors after the banking crises in 2008. Classic performance cars are safer investments & less tax to pay after they have been sold lol

You just need to look at the prices of Supras. Thanks to the new shape the previous models have just shot up in value. Back in the day you could have picked up an UK TT supra for less than 5k. Don’t get me started on the prices of Corolla GTs, CRXs, Scooby P1s, Skylines, FD RX7s etc etc.

Also, thanks to JDM import rules in the USA. The US customers are finally getting their hands on the 90s Jap performances cars that over 25 years old. Increased demand in Japan so it’s inevitable our Integras are going to increase in the coming years or very least the price of importing a car. Not forgetting you don’t get much bang for your pound anymore. Integras especially the DC2, are finally getting the praise it’s always deserved by the media, great if you have one but not so if you’re looking to buy one.

That’s what I was explaining in my prev post, it’s investors and collectors who are outbidding one another constantlynhiking the prices and inside info confirmed to me that it’s Japanese, USA, Australian and some HK buyers who have been paying the biggest money. Supply and demand. Just means most people won’t be able to afford a lot of the cars sooner rather than later.

I could still have an NSX but I’m not willing to pay the price they are, I don’t buy to invest and I’d rather put the money into a car I’d enjoy more :)

As good as they are, they are not 20K good IMHO.

I know a lot wont want to hear that.
I completely agree
Honestly, for me they are worth it, childhood dream car, lots of memories and nostalgia. I wouldn't get as much pleasure buying a newer Audi, BMW etc.

Don't get me wrong, I hate that prices are rising, it removes the opportunity for so many more people to enjoy these cars, increases theft, cost of parts, and means cars are hidden away.

But for value, don't forget £20k isn't what it used to be, base model new Focus? Probably not even a house deposit any more.

If £20k was the real market price, it's still better than buying or leasing a new car with 50% depreciation.

I think people get hung up on the I could have had a ropey one years ago for £5k etc. things change.

Very good points, especially the house deposit part, that said Elise 111R or Civic EK9? Both great cars but the best of the two value for money imo would be the Lotus (also appreciating) and far more fun on both the road and track :)

Yep, would like either an Elise or EK9 and were choices when I was looking for the DC5, but both are less practical/safe to take the family out. Maybe I need a second "weekend car" :)

Agreed lol, both are epic, the Elise 111R (Charged one) or the Exige are on my list and higher than the Atom now as I can't get my head around the complete impracticality of one lol. I love my friends one and it's epic on track but it is a one trick pony so to speak, could and would i ever use it on the road? unlikely whereas the Lotus I could and would. It's that or keep the 5 as the track toy and buy something else as an allrounder for the road now

I feel what will happen with DC5's is most will rust away and end up in the scrappy. Leaving only a hand full of nice examples by those who have kept them as investments etc. For example with the e30 m3, sapphire/sierra/escort cosworths etc. I don't think the dc5 (maybe the dc2) will be as iconic as those, but you never know. I imagine there being a handful of people who really love Honda's (with deep pockets) who might actually shell out 20k+ for them in the future.

Generally prices are on the up as a rust free example is becoming hard to find.

Couldn't agree more, the Ford RS brand and the likes have a much bigger and dare I say it better following as a whole, they are more well known, generally older owners with deeper pockets and the RS's seem to have always had a trend of prices increasing quite quickly post release etc.

The Escort and Sapphire Cosworths and most importantly the 3 Door RS 500 Cossie have and will always be worth a lot. The JDM equivalents are the R34 GTR, RX7, Supra TT imo. The R32 GTR although a great car is far behind in value increases to the R34 and the R33 is just a midrange that was generally overlooked (although having had 2 I don't know why as it was a very good and capable car), just the R34 looks miles nicer and the R32 was lighter and nimble and the original I guess. The RX7 was a dream car I never did buy as I was always put off by it using as much oil as fuel lol, I have started to look at them recently but there are no OEM decent ones of the right spec about now that I genuinely think are worth the money :-(

I agree on the Iconic part, the DC2 and 5 are Iconic in their own rights but not to the same level yet, and will they be? Unlikely, they are a very specific car built for a specific reason (fun), and most don't want to spend big money on them (yet, maybe that will change)...

Agreed! However £20k for an S15 might not be enough judging by this... (and another up for £30k on ebay)

Edit: and R32 GTR now will set you back £23k-35k onwards easily.
£30k for a S15 is crazy (coming from someone who owned a S15 a few years ago). You can still get S15 fresh imports for around £20k, but certain spec will cost more. That white one you linked looks like it has the full OEM Aero kit, which is worth a fortune. You can get a half-aero version (which just has the skirts and rear spoiler, no rear spats or aero front bumper), which are a bit cheaper. They're great cars and I did consider buying another instead of the DC5 but I just couldn't justify the £20k+ price tag.

While it's nice to see values of DC5 raise a bit for owners, it is sad that it'll price some people out of the market for them. Thankfully they're not as eye-wateringly expensive as R34s yet :p

There's a few nice DC5s coming up in the Japanese auctions shortly.

60k mile grade 4 2002 in white tonight - will report back with how much it goes for. Baz at BHP Imports reckons 1.4-1.6m JPY + OTR costs.
It went for 1.325m JPY - ~£14,500 OTR here according to BHP Imports.

Before I bought the Teg, I was interested in an S15 over in Ireland, bloke wanted £11k with the aero front bumper, or £9k without. This was a manual converted Spec S by the way haha. There's something 100% not right with that white one though as everything is a different shade of white upon closer inspection. Blokes getting ripped to shreds on all his for sale posts he's done for it, it's comical to be fair.

A couple of DC5s sold at auction in Japan last night :

Blue Facelift 40k miles - 2.1m JPY = £20,525 OTR here
White Facelift 18K miles - 2.9m JPY = £26,475 OTR here

Crikey.

People always forget the final fees involved, auction sale price is one thing but there’s much more post the sale completing to get the car here and on the road
Yeh at least +30% on top of the auction price. (vat + import taxes) and then you have to account for the import company commission as well...

Agreed, I’ve personally imported a few of my cars and it’s not as simple as people expect and my best mate currently runs an import company and regularly keeps me posted on the prices of cars he and I want and/or have had.

Times have changed and with the transition to green/elec cars I can see the prices remaining or even increasing more a bit mainly as people are trying to get to own or have owned and enjoyed certain cars before they become hard to not only obtain but to maintain and run.

Although older petrol and diesel cars will be ok once the law changes to stop new ones being made, who’s to say the price of petrol and diesel won’t slowly increase year on year forcing people to transition over to a greener elec car

They will definetly try and make it too expensive to run and tax a petrol car but being petrolheads that won't stop us. You won't see me anywhere near an electric car. People who buy new cars will be the ones who will switch sides but seen as I've no interest at all in anything modern then I'll just carry on driving the classics and enjoying life ha.

My 2p, firstly hi all - new here :)

I just secured a 2004 pre face-lift red dc5 (I used to have a red ep3 so had to be red for nostalgia reasons) from Japan which will be 18.3k OTR with underseal, all conversions etc through an importer.

It has 47k miles, zero rust, full respray and sits on mugen suspension with mugen MF10s. I looked for ages at everything else (we already have a mint 26k mileage tt6 supra which will be my other daily and a nice forester sti) but I wasn't tempted even by the evos at 18k. A nice r32 gtr is now 30+ too.

I loved driving a vtec ep3 and can't wait for the dc5. For me nothing can tick the same boxes of old jdm sports car that's fun to drive everyday, cheap to maintain and quick enough. These cars give a great driving experience whereas I feel newer cars are just a bit too tame on that front, they have outright speed but that's not where all the fun is. Will post up pics when it lands.

Hope to meet some of you soon, sorry for pushing up the prices!
