without wanting to dent your dreams mate but getting insured on a dc5 at 18 just isnt going to happen, if it does then its going to cost silly money...! i doubt anybody will insure you though. I really want a dc5 and have done for a couple of years but im only 19 with 2 years no claims and im not even thinking about trying to get isnured until im 21 and even then its going to be sky high...

Just out of interest what insurance group is the dc5? I have tried filling in details to retrieve a quote but as it is an import many of the insurers databases don't recognise the car.

I'm not sure if it has an official insurance group as it has never been sold over here.

What I can tell you is that mine costs about the same to insure as my 2002 S2000 did, which was group 20 and is widely regarded as a very expensive car to insure.

Same as mine mate! My 1st DC5 cost me exactly the same as my 2002 S2000, which is a group 20 car!

Do you miss your S Neil?

didn't realise it may be group 20, was thinking about 17/18. Not a lot of chance in me getting insured so I can definatly see why everyone was a bit shocked. The audi s3 is about 261bhp and its group 18e. I was thinkin the dc5 would be more or less the same. But then again the import factor is what tips the balance,
cheers for all advice

S3 is

210bhp
215bhp
225bhp

so that is a chipped one that your quoting at 261bhp which will be more insurance again!

Honestly mate, learn your trade first then get a hairy car!

Get a non powerful small hatch with great handling and just learn how to drive that. Otherwise its only going to maybe end in tears, as young drivers and powerful cars dont mix. I cant really talk as was driving a Ep3 Civic type R at 19 and paided through the nose for it. I was silly from time to time but got away with it, but some are less fortunate but at least I had 2 years driving expirence under my belt which is still absolutly feck all. I dont mean to sound all patronising as im 24 now ans still cant drive for shit

All im saying is wait a few yearsit will be more than worth it! The extra insurance u save can go towards extra mods and track days 8)

I am suprised anyone gave you a quote at 18. Its crap but like other have said pick up something a little less exotic for a few years and get some No Claims.

All these people with their sporty first cars. I had a mk4 escort the pride of Essex for my first car alloys and spoiler to boot

Also as it was says high miles is not an issue if the car is cared for on top of that you will still be getting 5 year old tax reason exports from japan of DC5s till 2010 more or less so plenty of time to get a nice one.

Cool, another S2000 convert! I do miss it mate, it was such a great car. Sometimes I would get in and go for a drive just for the hell of it, something I don't tend to do with the DC5 :( Great though it is it just doesn't give me the same buzz that the S2000 did. But with all the crap weather lately I haven't missed driving up and down the motorway in it every morning and night! :)

There's waaay more to insurance than just the power figure. One of the main tests for insurance group rating is how well the car deals with a 30mph shunt, as these are very common accidents.

Some cars for example may have very expensive headlights that are easily damaged in low-speed car park type shunts. Result = higher repair costs and therefore higher insurance group.

Another factor is how quickly minor damage can be repaired - the longer it takes to do simple jobs there higher the repair costs will be.

Obviously performance will be taken into account as high powered cars tend to find hedges more easily, but you can't determine insurance costs just by looking at the BHP figure. Some people on S2ki.com are paying less to insure Porsches and TVRs than they were on their S2000s.

i realise what you are saying. And by the way you will probably dislike this even more lol.. My dad offered to buy me a new s3 if I get 3 A's in a-levels, was just looking at alternatives because s3 may not be ideal. I wanted to take the opportunity in getting the car now its offered to me as I doubt I will be able to afford a car like a new s3 or a Dc5 for quite a while. Its not just me wanting to buy the car because I can etc
cheers
