1st off, Thankyou to all the people who make and run this forum, and to all the members who contribute, I've had invaluable advice over the years so, a big shout out to this community!

I've always been a bit of a noob to car maintenance and now feel comfortable sharing with with such a great bunch, piss takes are probably overdue!

Having my DC2 for 6 years and then getting the DC5 a couple of years later, i've always tried to keep the old girls fairly spic and span, typically every 2 weeks a decent wash and follow up polish.

Yes, a polish!

I've only recently discovered that they make this thing called wax that does'nt strip away a fine layer of paint every time you apply it!

First application of some Meguiers Ultimate this weekend and already apparent that I've been doing it wrong for many a year. Think I'm finally staring to realise why my nickname is Rodney.

Does anyone else have similar stories of such naivety for thier cars, or indeed anything else, to make me feel like less of a plum.

I suppose I can console myself with the fact that for all these years I've been 'adding lightness' - True Type R philosophy.

Mate, no shame in this in a sense! However, I‘m guessing if you‘ve never waxed your car you‘ve never Clay barred it or decontaminated it!? Get researching the products and process‘ of detailing! You will be surprised by what a bit of elbow grease and an afternoon will do to your car!

+1 in no shame, I work in a car accessory shop and I would say close to 50% of people don't realise there is a difference between wax and polish! Including some of the staff!

But now you do :xyes:

I was the same on the polish thing up until I bought my dc2 10 years ago.

I was once tinting the windows in my 106 1.1. I realised the rear quarters would pop out so I took them out to do them. I then thought, why not take out the rear screen it will be loads easier....

So I proceeded to put a massive screw driver in behind the seal and struck it "firmy" with my palm. This was followed by a large bang, and and explosion of glass all over my mate that was stood behind the car. It also resulted in the screw driver slipping and going through my top lip, yes through! Not to mention the large 300 odd quid bill for a new rear screen.

So I wouldn't feel too bad if I was you.

P.s. I was 17 years young and dumb.

Oh no! That must of been particulary painful at 17 yrs old, £300 is a lot of money at that age!

Correct, I will definately start looking into this a bit more, now that i'm a detailing expert!

A tip - Keep away from detailing world lol

I debadged my second car (‘94 escort saloon, after Ford dropped the Orion name) and removed the gunk with kitchen towel, thus severely swirling and dulling the paint where the badge was :-/

That was 21 years ago and now I feel really bloody old :-(

The other week I had an issue with central locking. Doors wouldn't open on key press. Fine by the key. Spent couple hours investigating but couldn't find a problem, so I thought I'd swap out the actuator. Still no luck.

Over the course of 2 days I'd checked basically every component and wire related to locking mech.

Found the issue in the end. I forgot the teg had 2 buttons on the key fob...... been driving the daily Honda with single button key too long.

I've only been driving DC5 for over 4 years...

Ouch. Reminds me of whe my key snapped in the ignition. I threw the fob on the seat next to me and turned the key with pliers so I could get to work. The car wouldn't start.so I called green flag. Turns out it was because the the fob was too far away....doh.
