Final Drive Question

Hi Lads

I am thinking of changing the final drive in my car

I read somewhere on here that you can use one out of the Crv, thats right isn't it???

Would doing this make much difference to acceleration etc???

Also does anybody know exactly the difference this will do to the revs on motorway driving, at the moment when im doing 120kms my revs are close to 4000rpm, will this change much if i do change it???

Any rough ideas on what it would cost me would be great to

Thanks, Darren

Yes, and the Civic FD2 has the same final drive of 5.062

Standard Y2M3 @ 8,400rpm

1st - 39.6mph - 63.7km/h
2nd - 60.7mph - 97.7km/h
3rd - 85.2mph - 137.1km/h
4th - 115.2mph - 185.4km/h
5th - 132.9mph - 213.9km/h
6th - 165.6mph - 266.5km/h

70mph - 112.7km/h = 3,550rpm

Standard Y2M3 with CRV/FD2 final drive @ 8,400rpm

1st - 37.2mph - 59.9km/h
2nd - 57.1mph - 91.9km/h
3rd - 80.1mph - 128.9km/h
4th - 108.5mph - 174.6km/h
5th - 125.1mph - 201.3km/h
6th - 155.9mph - 250.9km/h

70mph - 112.7km/h = 3,772rpm

P.S. 120km/h = 74.56mph = 3,781rpm on a standard gearbox & 4,018rpm with the CRV/FD final drive.

So this would improve acceleration but increase fuel consumption?
It increases the effective torque on the road (although the actual torque stays the same) so yes it will improve acceleration at the expense of top end speed. Very much doubt you'd see any real difference in fuel consumption but happy to be corrected re the DC5 (just thinking on other cars I've had this done on).

Re the cost not sure what the CRV FD comes in at (£150ish at a guess?) but the real cost is removing and taking apart the box - it's not a quick job I'm afraid. 4 or 5hrs (ish) I'd say for somebody that has done one before and works quite fast - more if not.

I assume the OEM ECU will be able to cope with the different speeds in different gears.. :)

It wouldn't know any different Stu..
I thought that might be the case, but always better to ask :)

I might buy one if they are not too pricey and hoard it with the lightened flywheel and fit when the clutch gets changed.

Exactly what Im thinking. Just not sure if/when my clutch will wear out :?

Best time to do it along with the clutch, it's still a fair bit more work though as the box needs to come apart.

I'm hoping to rebuild a spare box I've got soon and might have a CRV FD for sale when I do.

Anybody know how much these go for new? Is a countershaft needed as well? Mine had it fitted when I got the car.

Does anybody know the part numbers for the ITR countershaft & countershaft end bearing?

They are quite pricey new, in actual fact the Spoon final drive is cheaper than the Honda one..

A quick question, are DC5 and UK EP3 final drives the same?
