Just fitted a new clutch to my car over the weekend so had gearbox subframe wishbones drive shafts etc all out and back in again
i got transmission oil from honda but it was not mtf3 it was a castrol oil
so after fitting everything back together and changing the oil it seems to me
the limeted slip diff is binding and then jumping out because when im driving straight its fine but when turning it starts jumping and trying to pull the car straight and im getting wheel hope on the inner wheel of the turn has anyone had simular problem with there car
i know theres nothing wrong with steering suspension etc because if i knock it into neutral around bends its fine and all gear changes are perfect also
any suggestions :?:

If it's not a standard LSD then from what you've described you haven't done anything wrong and I had the same when I changed my oil in the gearbox. It's known as 'chatter' and happens on plated LSD's. It feels and sounds similar to a CV joint hanging off?

I thought, and so did every mechanic I spoke to, that the LSD had decided to throws its hand in so I spent a lot of money replacing the LSD only for it to happen again. If it's an aftermarket LSD which it sounds like it is, then either the garage you bought the car from or the previous owner has put some 'friction modifier' in the gearbox to quieten the chatter down, possibly to make the car sell easier as a lot of people would walk away from a car that sounded like that.

If you definately know it's a standard LSD then you will need to replace the oil with MTF III. If it's a plated LSD then if you want to quiten the noise down and make it smoother then you will need 1-2 bottles of friction modifier.......but this may cause you to have less traction.

I've chosen to just put up with mine to get as much traction as I can, although it's an absolute pig to drive around town :(

In that case he will have put some friction modifier in with the oil which you've now drained out. Do you find you get more traction now than before?

I didnt drive it hard as i was afraid the gearbox was about to break up
its completly undriveable feals like the lsd has been welded up
im going to bring it to a vtec specialist tomoro

Just be very careful where you take the car to incase you get billed for a new LSD when you don't need it. An average mechanic or even gearbox builder wouldn't know what the problem is and would just assume that your LSD is at fault. I don't know where you live but there are a few specialists such as TGM in Hampshire or TDi North/South who will be able to tell you for sure.

I am a hgv mechanic myself hence me fitting the clutch. but i would not have much experiance with high performance cars lsd etc
so i still have the old oil so i will try the old oil first and then bring it to the tuning factory in dublin ireland and see what they think.
could be something stupid thou

Andy Mo knows his stuff there, the lads have loads of expierience.. slight difference between a DC5 and a HGV
Hopefully they can find the problem with out having to re-do the whole job..

Solved the problem today. went down to the tuning factory and they advised me to use MOTUL 75W140 oil its 70 euro for two litres but its worth every penny! :D lsd chatter is completly gone and no clunking or clicking only the slightest rubbing sound at creepping speed you would strugle to hear it. gear changes are all very smooth even second gear when cold. I would highly recomend this oil. you would not even know its an uprated diff when driving around town very smooth :D

(100% synthetic extreme pressure lubricant specially formulated for gearboxes and limeted slip differential gears of racing cars track/rallye.
excelent stability at high temperatures)celox you should try it in your
transmission its not a friction reducer its just very good oil.
friction reducers will wear your synchros in your gearbox if left in long term :!:

Yes i'm tempted to try it to make the car a better drive on the road but i'm unsure whether it would cause the diff to slip more or not :?

Well guys, i guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say.

We use MILLERS OILS in both road and Race cars,
The Race car is faster then most Time Attack Turbo cars in the same class.

but their straight line speed is (our 116mph compared to their 140mph) faster at i.e.Brands Hatch, but we put faster lap times in overall, so guess what we (i.e.Hondas) are better at ???? (answers on a postcard please).

Millers will do for worm or plate diffs, ring DAVE BELT at Millers Oils, he is a great guy, he will help you as he helped us, Say you have seen our car using his product and he will give you a better deal Im sure.

Paul ,

I want to quieten the LSD down so i'll give Dave a call tomorrow. I don't want to mess around and the get the wrong oil as I know it could be a costly mistake.

I spoke to Dave at Millers who was really helpful, but he didn't have anything there for me until towards the end of February. He said they were going to have a nano-technology product which would be suitable to quieten an LSD down after then :(

I can't get hold of any Motul 75w/140 so went for some Redline 80w/140 which claims to help 'LSD chatter'. I'm putting it in sometime next week so hopefully it will work just as well as the Motul :?

Thats funny,
we buy millers already for both cars, and its mint..it quietened out box down and made the shifts less clicky at fast shifting speeds.

Did you say you wanted the same stuff as we buy.??

Paul,
