I have one of these in my integra, not shielded or covered.

Am I right in thinking a standard oem airbox filter would probably be better than this
?

Anything enclosed with a cold air feed would better.

When your intake temps become hot, the ECU would retard timing and you would see a loss of power.

Thats what I was thinking, but does it really affect the car if your driving fast say with the cold air constantly getting pushed through the engine bay?

I could understand this in traffic but say on the motorway?

I wouldn't know what the temp threshold is before the ecu does something, I would guess motorway driving would not get you anywhere near this.

The cooler the intake temp the better, I know from a friend changing from a k&n typhoon to a tegiwa gm copy intake temps dropped significantly under normal and heavy footed driving conditions, so heatsoak into an open cone filter is pretty high which suggests the bay still stays pretty warm at 70mph.
