they can help, i changed my gearbox oil on my 45k service, 30k early, and there were no metal bits at all, oil was in really good condition! unlike my track saxo when most of the gearbox almost fell out. :p same for engine oil, for a few bob i cant see why there not worth having :D

due to the sump being deeper and holding a higher level of oil.....

I know what you meant numpty, was just teasing. Longer one is for the sump.

It is a good mod, nearly every race car out there will have something like this, i've even seen magnets glued and zip tied on to cars.

If any particles are present it doesnt necessarily mean your engine is about to pop, but if the parts are identifiable it can help, i.e bits of gear teeth. It also helps prevent them floating around. The dc5 gearbox has a magnetic strip fitted as std but its inside so can't be cleaned without splitting the box.
Don't forget with modern engines many of the parts are non ferrous so arn't magnetic anyhow, cylinder head, pistons etc.
IMO worth the twenty odd quid.

Just to revive this bad boy thread than start a new one ;)

I'm looking at a few so far, I've seen J's Racing, Spoon, and Skunk 2 offerings... assuming all do the same unless some are more "magnetic" than others?

Anyways, if its worth it, I'll get one in time for my next TGM oil upgrades next month.

Guessing the engine sump is more important than the transmission one?

I'd have thought the gearbox one would be more important as that hasn't got a filter or anything to capture particles in?

Saying that i've only got a magnetic plug in my sump and not in my gearbox

Definitely worth it, get the cheapest one as they all do the same thing, gearbox and sump ones both work well

Ive just bought some skunk2 ones for £25 from funky powers ebay shop.

They label the longer one for the gearbox and shorter for sump!

I fitted the gearbox one at the weekend when I changed the gearbox oil and on inspection the thread on the gearbox is really long so using the shorter one probably wouldnt have much effect? So I fitted the longer one :D
