Problems selecting 3rd

At cadwell park on monday i was finding it difficult downshifting from 4th to 3rd. Have no problems on the first couple of laps but the more laps i was doing the harder it was to select 3rd. This is only on downshift and no crunching/grinding just simply didn't want to go in. Driving the car around today it's fine again, but i know the problem will come back next trackday. Never had this problem on trackdays before!

i will change gear oil again but i know it won't be that as i change it every time i change engine oil which is every 6000miles max I also have a B&M short shifer.

Any ides what this could be?

Take it nothings catching on the selector? Aftermarket air intake?
Don't think as its only happening when the car is being driven hard after a few laps?

Still worth checking IMO, start simple and work through all possibilities.

What air intake are you using?

How's your clutch fluid?

I'm with mikegsi though, sounds like something is hitting the selectors on top of the gearbox.
Also, check the condition of the cables at the gearbox and make sure the cables have room to move inside the cabin.

Will do these checks. Just spoke to tom@tgm he said i should check the cables in centre console as sometimes with short shifters it can put strrain on cable causing it to bend. Replacement cables are nearly £300

I am oem and have this sometimes... I find selecting another gear, then neutral with a slight rev (2k) then from neutral push straight forward... Never a problem shifting up, only from a higher gear down...

I've been having problems especially with 2nd and 3rd, and had a look tonight and the old standard cold air feed pipe that went into the airbox, the rubber one, was catching the selector!

Pulled it off and it was better but still not right at all.. Gonna have a look this weekend and hopefully sort it.. If the new cables are £300 then i hope it isn't the cable that's bent or worn!! :xcry:

Gruppem shouldn't catch on anything as long as it's been fitted properly.

After ruling that one out check the actual selector itself, 2 person job, one changes gear, one to watch the selector movement.

Deffo worth following Tom's advice too, he knows his stuff

sounds to me like worn syncro's. if your using the gearbox really hard to slow the car it will be putting a lot of strain on the transmission.

I get this all the time on track mate - was driving at Cadwell without using third for most of the day. :( Will be getting the box swapped soon(ish) though all being well.

Check the bush on the selector ontop of the box, where the linkage cable joins and slips over the bush

My bush turned out to be worn right down, and as such when changing gear it wasn't getting a proper grip of it so wasn't moving the selector exactly the right way, and was making some gearchanges difficult to get

Which has eventually over time resulted in me now needing a gearbox rebuild (waiting to find out, dropped the car off today at a gearbox specialist)

So check that rubber bush, it may be starting to wear, so get it replaced and things should be fine, before it causes damage like mine did!

Is there much play in the gear lever, like can you move the gear lever a little bit forward and backwards in neutral?
