Problems with gears

Recently I decided to sort out the annoying whirring sound my gearbox made when sitting idle, now I was pretty confident it was the input shaft bearing that was making the noise so I booked my car in to have all bearing and seals replaced inside the box.

It worked and I no longer had the annoying whirring sound, however when attempting to select 5th gear, the gear stick was moving to far over to the right which wasn't how it was before so it was off back to the garage who carried out the work, half an hour later and a little bit of tinkering and he had sorted it, the gearstick stopped right below 5th.

Apparently the cause of the problem was the solenoid that is there to stop you selecting 5th below 10mph was faulty

Perfect I thought, it's sorted.

But then today I was driving home from work and went for 5th gear and the stick again moved to far to the right,

slightly annoyed I carried on driving home but then when I went for 6th gear it somehow managed to hit reverse, I instantly released the gearstick allowing it to slip back into neutral and then tried for 6th again... But Yet again the same thing happened!

I'm at a total loss as to what's happened, it did not have these problems before it had the work done and the gearbox just doesn't feel right to me now.

The mechanic that carried out the work mentioned about some of the wiring being a bit interesting the first time I took it back.

I let him know the problem has returned with the addition of the 6th he's issue and he got back saying it sounds like a wiring issue somewhere .

Anyone heard of anything like this before ?

Or have any idea of how to get it sorted ?

There was a guy on here before summer with a similar issue, while on track he was selecting too far over, when going for 5th. Turns out it was the little sensor on top of the gearbox which locks it out over a certain speed.

While I think about it, max has had a similar issue. Maybe worth giving him a message mate. :) (maxvr6)

Thanks mate, I'll send him a message.

Totally gutted, spent so much money on it for it to come back with more problems than when it went in :(

As you've mentioned, it's a solenoid that prevents reverse being selected above a certain speed so either that's faulty or more likely, the wiring has been upset and maybe it's an intermittent fault with a bad connection. The only other thing I know of which will stop the solenoid engaging is if the speed sensor isn't reading but I'm guessing as you've mentioned no issues with the speed that this isn't the case.
You may be better cutting your losses and getting one of the specialists to take a look. It's a pain but if you are coming away with more problems than you started with?

I had a problem with a loose connection on the speedo converter(on top of the gear box). I meant that the gear stick would go too far over and could have went in to reverse when driving forward. Just cleaned up the wiring.

Yeah mate, no problems with the speedo or anything else just the trouble selecting gears :(

Upset wiring would make sense to me so I think that's the route I'll have to go down.

When you say specialists who do you mean ? An auto electrician ?

As Jimmer has mentioned I had a similar problem but in my case it was the speed sensor that was broken, this meant the cluster didn't register any speed and the reverse lock-out stopped working on the gearbox.

Thanks mate , was just about to send you a pm but it wouldn't send using the tapatalk app.

the speedo is still working on mine so it can't be that, thanks for the info though, helps to rule out things so I can get to the bottom of this.

I was thinking more along the lines of TGM or your local equivalent. I'm not sure where you are based.

Got the car back, everything working as it should now.

Andy at Automek identified what he believed to be the issue within about 2 minutes of viewing it and it turns out he was correct!

It was the converter box from kph to mph that was causing the issue however he also noted that the wiring around it wasn't all that great so he also changed that for me.

Box feels flawless now!

I also had my extender bar removed from the gear stick which was on the car from the day I bought it ... All I can say is wow! What a difference!

Thanks for the input guys, it really helped put my mind at ease that it was just a little niggle and nothing more sinister!
