Project: Potentially Dodgy exhaust

After all my research into quiet exhausts, I stumbled on a second hand APEXi Hayabusa cat back near my house here in Ireland. He wanted 350 for it, I offered 250 and got it. In the end he gave me another 20 quid off it so all in all it cost me 230 quid (euro). Stoo has already warned me off this exhaust. He'd love to get his hands on one but this one was way too battered for him (as you'll see below). I respect his opinion as he seems to know what he's talking about, but I think this might turn out to be a bit of a bargain buy.

Please give me any advice that you guys may have. Express your concerns, etc. The guy doing the dyno and install for me reckons it wont affect my car's performance.

The Plan:
1. Clean the exhaust up a bit - Done 12/03/2011
2. Get my car Dyno'd, check what power I'm making. I'm OEM other than a K&N Filter.
3. Fit the APEXi Hayabusa
4. Get my car Dyno'd again. I'm concerned that I may lose power as this exhaust is not in perfect condition and has had repair work done to it. As long as it sounds as good as I've heard, and I don't lose power, I'm happy.

The exhaust has had its fair share of knocks! See for yourself:

I've given the backbox a good scrub and it came up nicely:

Stay tuned - I will be updating this thread when i get to the next phase. All advice/feedback appreciated.

Got the impression you really wanted one. That's what i mean by "dying to get his hands on one". I've edited the above even though I don't see the difference. It's a common expression here.

This one has been through the wars yeah, it's in a bit of a state. Hence the before and after dyno... It has no leaks, and it's underneath the car so nobody sees the damage. As long as it sounds great and performs well that's all that matters, right?

I've also bought a supersprint backpipe... Anyone know if that'll fit this?

Tbh I will be shocked if it affects the performance.
I doubt it will. It's just alittle dented.
Do they make good gains normally?
If they do you should still make gains.
Got yourself a bargain and it seems like a nice rare exhaust system.
Look forward to results

The damage to the silencer shouldn't affect it at all, maybe a touch more noise, just check it hasn't punctured a hole in it, the piping damage will affect the performance of that particular exhaust, it should still be better than standard but you wouldn't be getting the full potential of the apexi, how much it will affect it is anyones guess, I'd be tempted to get it repaired tbh, shouldn't cost too much to do

As far as I'm aware the b-pipe is titanium... That's what the previous owner told me... It weighs very very little... So would need a titanium specialist I think... I have no idea how much it would cost to repair... Would it be worth it?

I used some secret weapons along with a bucket of hot water with fairy liquid in it, and a bucket of cold water:

I'm delighted with how it came up... Whatever about the bpipe, the backbox only has a small nick on it...

It's that W5 engine cleaner man. You can get it in Lidl... It's violent when it comes to tar and grease and oil... Don't even think about using it on bodywork, i think it would go straight through your laquer. It's only 3.50 a can too. I swear by the stuff...

Its the centre section and manifold on the oem setup that causes most of the restriction Larz, the oem backbox is actually a very good piece of kit. After that its the backbox that will add the extra noise to the system.

The problem with that centre section is that the dents are going to have an impact on flow and performance as a result. Not sure what the diameter of the section is either.

Does the backbox fit on the oem centre section Larz? The supersprint backpipe will fit the oem backbox and anything else that will go onto an oem exhaust.

I have my sources :) (Looks at cpoh)... I might be selling it on though, depending on how i get on with this exhaust... I'll put you top of the list :)

I am worried about the dents to be honest... That's why i have bought the supersprint pipe... Ideally i'll bolt the hayabusa to the supersprint b-pipe but god only knows how much noise that's going to make!

So they do, they have it listed as 2" bore though. I thought the standard exhaust was 2.25"? :-k
