Rust Protection

I recently heard that the car is not rust proof, having no undercoat and only one coat of paint.

Apparently, it's to do with the fact that in Japan they don't use salt on their roads.

How much will it cost to get the car undersealed?

Also, can i do anything to help prevent rust on the bodywork, particually round the wheel arches.

Cheers

£80 - £100 for undersealing.

I'm going to put a line of grease around the welds in the engine bay & boot when I get chance. I recommend that - it will keep rust from poking through the joints.

Yup what he said. Also go and buy some Waxoyl. Paint this around the engine bay and anywhere that water might sit - like when you open the boot. Also spray it underneath your wheel arches, in all cavities you can (doors, sills, nooks/crannies), underneath the car - EVERYWHERE. It will repel water and cut out oxigen so rust will be very unlikely to start.

Repeat this once or twice a year. Its great stuff - I had a 1986 escort that was treated with it from new and it was rust free in 2003!

Note: Hose the car thoroughly underneath and leave to dry before spraying the Waxoyl.

I've been offered two levels of rust-proofing by a garage - either underbody sealing (£130) or full undersealing (inside door cards, rear quarters etc. - £200).

Sounds from the above like the full monty is the best option, just wanted to check that others think this is necessary?

(I might also try and find somewhere a bit cheaper than £200!)

If you are expecting to own the car in 5 years time, crack on. If you intend on selling it next year, don't waste your money.

Depends how much u use your car too..

mine sits there for a week so on a day like today absolute drenching rain never gets hit hard.

I got mine undersealed for about 130 i think, all inside box sections and underneath etc. They kept it for 2 days as cleaned underside first then left to dry.

Also same place id sikboys car.

The place I rang (a bodyshop in the Yellow Pages like any other) is in central Nottingham, i.e. I can leave it there for the day whilst going to work. Haven't called anywhere else yet, but will do some places closer to my house later today/tomorrow to compare prices.

I did choose adverts that mentioned restoration etc. as I imagine they deal more with the rust side of things!

Yeah its about 1min from my house pal. The lad who actually did our cars was a friend of mine, got to know him as he likes his cars etc..

HE NOW WORKS FOR PORSCHE WILMSLOW  which is a shame as not there anymore but still a good garage and other staff ok imo.

Dont have the number to hand but ill get back to you. Sikboy dropped his car off and left me his keys so as soon as it was done i brought it home and safe etc.. :p

as he couldnt get there after work before they closed etc.
