Hi guys. Im a soon to be DC5R owner, the car has landed and its due for its SVA tomorrow :D !!! I've sorted the insurance but they require a Thatcham Cat I (alarm and immobilser) to be fitted.

What security systems would you recommend? I see that Clifford and Toad look to be the current market leaders.

Cheers now...

25 views and no replies? Err... thanks! Then again, I understand if you guys don’t want to divulge you security specs for obvious reasons.

BTW, I may as well use this opportunity to introduce myself and my DC5...

I live near Reading, Berks... and I’ve just taken delivery of a stock Championship White 2001 DC5R. My 3rd Type-R... and the best! I've owned a DC2 and an EP3 (still got it, for sale). Pics coming soon.

Took her for the SVA today... failed on the tyres! It's got a brand new set of Yoko Advans on it... but there’s no 'load' rating on the tyres! Everything else went thru fine. I'm thinking of sticking my CTR wheels on there and running her back to the test centre. Failing that, I was told by the test centre that if I could obtain a letter from Yoko with the load rating on she would pass. Bizarre.

It appears that the 40+ DC5 owners are dispersed thinly over the UK. I’ve only seen one other driving around – last Tuesday in Reading as a matter of fact. If there are any DC5 meets organised in the South, I’ll be certainly coming along as well as events held at my ‘local’ circuit, Castle Combe. A few dates to put in your diary (and me to add the ‘Meets’ forum; sorry mods!)

24th April 2004 (Saturday) – Spring Action Day; variety of vehicles.
22nd May 2004 (Saturday) – JapFest
12th Jun 2004 (Satuday) – Summer Action Day

Oh… if any of you guys are near the Reading area, there’s a large Jap meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Gate Retail Park (Nr Madjeski stadium). We had well over 120cars last month. Yes… I know the meet is on as I type, but I’m working nights! Gutted.

See you guys around…

Hi,
Think your user name in combination with no posts for 2 months then asking about security may have put a few of us off.
Good luck with getting your car through sva, you're taking the braver route by doing it yourself so I suppose the savings must be worth it.
Usually get the importer to do sva and fit cat 1 alarm etc,to save on the hassle.
We got a meet soon in the Midlands but don't know of any planned for further south. :)

Scary,

You've spotted the obvious reason no-one jumped back with instant responses to your post. As in everything else, cost is determined by a combination of brand-value and extras. You've named two of the more expensive and best-known brands, each of whom supply systems that do a lot more than alarm and immobilise your car. There are also many other brands (often subsidiaries of those already named) that supply similarly- or lesser-specced models, often at a cheaper cost. The best (though least helpful) advice is to shop around and see what you want and how much you want to pay for it.

Scary,

In conjunction with a cat1 alarm I would also consider fitting a tracking device such as a tracker or trackstar and also blakjax anti-carjack. I used to own a scooby and know at least one person whose blakjax saved his car from being nicked (The little sod that nicked it tried to do my mate for aggravated gbh when he caught up with him  )

I'd say plump for a Toad alarm all the way. I've had many Clifford and Toad alarms, and all the clifford ones except one gave me grief. All of the Toad Cat1's i've had on various cars have been perfect. The Toad AI606 is the one to go for. Price wise they are around £300 - £350 fitted, plus you can buy extra like window lifters, anti-tilt etc...

Scary,

Don’t know if this is any use but... Clifford’s new range of alarms should be available soon, the G5 series, the only problem is I believe they are not yet approved. I am looking at one but require it to be CAT1 to be covered for theft. I have asked Thatcham when and if they are to be approved.

I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for all your input guys... I feel a little more welcome

I was thinking of the Clifford Concept 300... maybe with Intellistart (show off, I know!) - c. £350... + £175. The Toad also caught my eye Chris, I'll do a bit more research...

The thing is Phil, I cant wait much longer than a few days to have the system installed as its in 'storage' till this time next week (cant wait, should have it registered!). From then, its on my drive waiting for cats to jump on it, birds to crap on it and theiving scum to eye it up. I dont sleep enough as it is...

Anyways, my main reason for starting this post was because I didnt know if any owners found they had problems with getting them installed... I suppose its the same as doing a CTR...? One security specialist mentioned that I would need a separate locking motor for the passenger side... we'll see.

Cheers!

If you have remote start on the car (Intellistart) it will void the CAT1 approval apparantly... You may want to double check that...
