i bought a dc5 a few weeks ago, it is due a service in a couple of thousand miles, just wondering would it be worth doing myself, what bits do i need? oil, filters etc. and how easy is it to do? or would it be better off me getting it done by a mechanic and how much roughly would i be looking to fork out?

I do the oil and oil filter change myself.. Its very easy to do.

The only thing that may give you trouble is taking the oil filter off as some times it can be very tight. You will need a strap and socket tool thing to losen it.

If you've done a service on a a car before this shouldnt be difficult for you

Theres a variety of oils used....as long as its fully sythetic. System takes 5 litres, better to buy a 6 litres, use the extra for top ups. Try and be careful not to spill oil on the manifold when you're changing the filter out....

my view on this is that how ever easy it is people want to see it done by a specialist e.g. TGM or Honda (ouch) when i sold my facelift recently thats one of the first things people asked about. It depends if yuou want to save the cash now and then have trouble selling your car or having to offer it at a highly reduced price. The choice is yours.

i use;

hamp oil filter
mobil1 0w-40 oil 5L
OEM spark plugs (only need to do these every 15-20k) they have a lifespan of 30k (NGK Platinum)

very easy to do it all yourself. if your oil is quite dirty, use an oil flush before changing the oil.

i've brought oil from oilman - Opie Oils

give them a call, generally can help you out over the phone at good prices

personnally when buying a car i prefer to see invoices/stamps etc. by someone reputable or consistency, otherwise it will effect resale value for sure IMO

i'm sure i have read on an autodata disc that the oem spark plugs don't need to be changed until 75k, anyone know if this is correct?

The dealer just put 10W/40 semi sythetic in my car... i realise itl burn quicker but it should be ok until it's used right?

iv only had it like a week....

then i can put fully synthetic in it \:D/
