Slight Smoking in V-Tec

Hi,

I've got a slight smoking coming from the exhaust whenever I hit V-Tec. Wanting to do a compression test at the weekend but could someone advise what the compression ratios should be?

Also, is there anything that could be causing this that's not compression related? It's not thick black smoke, just a little puff when V-Tec engages...

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Phil

Check your oil level. See if its going down. If so your stem seals are damaged. ( if i remember rightly)
Was the case anyway with the old b series engines. Shouldnt affect compression. If its a little and not much and your oil level is not dropping by loads i wouldnt worry. Some use oil some dont. As long as your topping it up with a 1l every couple of weeks.

Leaking valve stem seals tend to smoke on start up.. it could be a number of things causing it to smoke.. a compression check will determine if its a mechanical fault inside the cylinder. if all compressions are fine it could be a fueling issue.

It's using about 1L every 1,000 miles iirc.... And I'm using 5W 30 Mobil 1. Engine's done about 85k.

Doesn't drop massively, but it does get through it eventually... Will have to arrange a compression test this weekend.

Sounds like it's using about the same as mine over 1000 miles ish, has never caused me concern as all previous Honda's ive owned always used oil pretty much the same way, I also get a bit of smoke in V-Tec

Not sure about DC5 compression but the EP3 is Compression pressure above 135psi Maximum variation within 28psi

Damaged or worn valve seats
Damaged cylinder head gasket
Damaged or worn pistons rings
Damaged or worn piston and cylinder bore

I'm sure someone on here will know the DC5 compression figures, probably not hugely different from the EP3

Valve stem seals or worn valve guides is my guess, If its piston rings it will smoke all the time.
