Taking the Plunge

Right after 6 months or so of standard ownership im looking to tweak the DC5 a bit with some mods.

First on my list is the Fast Road setup at TGM/Powerstation inc the fitting of front and rear camber adjusters. At the same time its up there i hope to arrange fitting of some lowering springs, preferably the Spoon progressive ones if i can get some at a good price.

After that is where im confused, my initial plan was to purchase the Spoon 4-2 manifold, Spoon B-Pipe and Spoon N1 exhuast. I wanted to keep the std 2-1 for the cat and also some sound proofing with the option later to purchase a 2-1.

Firstly does anyone have that setup with the std 2-1?? just wondering what the noise is like? ideally if someone did have the setup i wouldnt mind a little mini meet etc or even video clips

Secondly though i saw a N1 exhaust recently and i did not like the tailpipe  someone mentioned the word peashooter and it described exactly what i was thinking in my head. So im not sure whether to go for this option anymore, was tempted by the Reinhard Semi Ti street exhaust which looks uber 8) but that has no real performance figures to back it up.

I like the larger tailpipe, and something that is proven to provide good performance gains especially with the other parts i have mentioned (spoon 4-2, b-pipe) - any ideas?? are there any options to change the tailpipe on the Spoon?

Finally my plan as far as induction goes is to pickup a Spoon Drop-in filter and also purchase the 5zigen carbon intake. Gruppe-M is just too much money when i can get both options above new for under £300. Also i feel utilising the standard box will limit sound increase as along with other mods i dont want it to be too loud. Any thoughts on this possible setup?

I hoped you'd come round and want more power, nice one mate :)

If you pop down into England, let me know, you can pop in for a Cuppa :p

my backbox is a mystery one - maybe custom not sure. Sounds great so might just keep that.

All i have heard is that Spoon Mani is big improvement on stock and the 4-2 gives better mid power with the 2-1 adding high rpm power. Unless someone has proved otherwise that im not aware of?

The Toda manifold is much better than the Spoon ime - loads more mid-range torque and more top-end too. Depends whether you cba with re-fitting the cat for MOTs though.

And I agree with you that the Spoon N1 BB looks like a pea-shooter. It also sounds like a fart can, even with the OEM mani.

I'd get a Toda mani, probably not much wrong with your cat-back but it depends on how much noise you want. If you want to change it then I'd suggest Toda, HKS, Mugen twinloop, or a Spoon B-pipe and OEM BB. All of these are quiet-ish and have made good power on various people's cars. The manifold is much more important than the cat-back though tbh.

The Toda manifold also allows the engine to hold peak power.

On mine peak power is reached and held flat for 500rpm.

From nosing around dyno plots cars with the Spoon manifold appear to hit peak then power tails off pretty quickly, taking the torque curve with it.

When i first got the DC5 toda manifold was top of my list of eventual mods but having seen some crack etc i was going to scrap that idea.

I dont fancy uprating all the mounts etc plus the idea of the vibrations when idle dont appeal.

Is there other ways to ensure the manifold doesnt crack? as if i can do something to avoid the problems then i wouldnt mind keeping the OEM b-pipe and my custom job for now and just get the toda manifold.

Don't be such a sissy, get the mounts in!

They're a good mod on their own as they make the car feel more responsive to throttle inputs by stopping the engine slopping around.

The Spoon 2-1s crack as well - I've got a cracked one in my attic. There's no free lunch here fella

have to agree with evs here on the manifold's the toda is the superior of the two. Just the MOT thing to worry about :?

you have pm btw

The idle speed can be raised to eliminate almost all of the vibration at idle, via K-Pro obviously.

You dont need to install ALL of the engine mount inserts, I think you can leave out the baulk head (rear) one to soften the effect and it'll still be firm enough to protect the Toda. That's an option.

Two guys on here have got their DC5's through the MOT with the Toda on.

...and it's not exactly a major transplant to do a swap if (and I emphasise IF) the car won't go through with the Toda fitted.

I am a sissy

Im not worried about the MOT thing, i can swap the std stuff on no problem it was just the cracking and idle problem if mounts fitted.

Ill have a read up then on the Engine mounts etc - but off top of your head what would i need to purchase and how easy they to fit etc?

I wont be K-Pro'ing it for a while so leaving out the rear one like User said to soften the idling would be ideal.

They're about £30 i think. Energy engine mount inserts, try System-R.

You need the car on ramps and the engine propped for safety.

I need to know where and how! :D

Not fancying a manifold change just for the MOT, plus mine is due in January (not the best time of year for working on cars...)

You can get away with just a torque damener. It's all I'm running though I wouldn't reccomend that for hard constant use. I'm getting a rear mount in to make doubly sure.

Planning some work on my Teg for next summer since working on cars during the winter sucks without a garage. Probally going to be looking at

Fannymold
Spoon Exhaust System
Gruppe M
KPRO
Engine Mounts

Those will do for starters. Keeping it looking standard of course. I am quite close to TGM so they will probally get to know me well over the coming months 8)

I found these Here i assume you purchase them and specialist place fits them??

So they can only fit say the front ones which will limit movement and also limit idling vibrations? or fit both and limit most engine movement but idle vibrations will increase?

Any idea on fitting cost for these?

IIRC System-R charged me about £70 supplied and fitted. Don't quote me on that though as I was having a load of other stuff done at the same time, and that might not have included the parts. Budget for £100 and you might find some change.

Can't comment on what the vibes are like with only one fitted - I've got both, and a J's ETD wound up to full stiffness...
