Taking the Teg in for a service.

It's a 2003 prefacelift.

I'm taking it in because it's due it's major service, and although I've serviced and repaired every car I've ever owned, they've all been cheap, old and simple. This one isn't, so I want it done by the professionals.

I know what the major service for my car entails, so I can check afterwards that everything has been done, but what are common ways for them to try and squeeze a few extra quid out of a customer?

Is there anything I should specifically ask them to do/check/skip?

I'm fairly sure with it being a main dealership and the Honda factory being so close they've got a lot of experience with various Type-Rs and will look after it properly, am I just being an overprotective owner?

Does anyone have experience with the Swindon one?

Here is what you need (I may have missed something), go for all OEM where possible,
  • 5L for Engine Oil
  • Oil Filter + Washer
  • 5L for Coolant
  • 2L for MTF3 Gearbox Oil + Washer
  • 1L for Powersteering Fluid
  • 1L for Brake Fluid
  • 2x Pollen Filters
  • Air Filter
  • Sparkplugs
  • Valve Clearances
  • Timing Chain Inspection
I'd recommend that you take it to a specialist that is local to you (I have no experience with Honda dealerships). Hope this helps you!

These cars really aren't special. In terms of maintenance.
Other than valve clearances, it's like servicing any old car.
There isn't really anything on them that you'd need expert knowledge for. In the sense, they use standard every day suspension design, balljoint, bearings, bushes. None of it is some exotic, need to be a specialist stuff.

Major doesn't always mean much will be changed. Generally services for any car go 1st small, 2nd big, 3rd small etc.
Small usually being oil filter, no wheels off, partial checks of some component's, pollen filter, screenwash etc.
Large being wheels off, proper inspection of all components.
Only by mileage, would a large include plugs, air filter etc. So you need to clarify what you want doing. As the service it's due, could be very different from what you envisage a major service to be.

It's the 75K one, so it's probably overdue a full check over.

So far I know I need to replace the front pads and lower bushes, but I'm going to do them myself so will be asking them not to do that.

Do you know when it was last serviced? I'd advise to get it all done if you can afford to, Honda will most likely charge a lot more than a specialist though.

Not a clue sadly, when it came over it had no history. It came on 68K, and the oil looked fresh so I'm assuming had recently had a small service.

In that case I'd do it all :)

Do you know of any recommendations for around North Wilts? I've sent a request for a call back to TGM over in Fleet as it seems highly regarded and I don't mind a trip out (although the lady may be unhappy haha)

You may be better calling TGM as sometimes it takes a little while for an email back if they're busy. I'd definitely recommend the guys at TGM they will look after your car.

Just go to Cox Motor parts and order a service kit, do it all yourself
You can always get the garage to do a multi point check on the chassis etc to be sure everything else is good. That shouldn't cost much.

I think that's what I'll do then, I have the feeler gauges and all the previous threads everyone's written on here so I can't imagine the valve clearance checks could be too bad.

If I remember correctly the engine has to be stone cold for that doesn't it? Left overnight for example.

As far as I'm aware that is best practice yes, one thing to be aware of is to Hondabond certain points of the engine cover,
