Think my clutch is slipping.....

Over the cold period and last few weeks the teg has decided to not like second untill a warm up drive.

Now, i have posted about this recently, changed oil etc and im aware of the "common crunch" if you like, when cold. Thats no longer the issue, Mine just feels as though its not actually going in atall anymore. Feels abit slack then sometimes tight when on the move, Just not like it did last winter. Summer isnt a problem, which was making me think something might be up. ( i thought the clutch wasnt 'engaging' properly making it difficult,- if that is even likely. Was just my notion. Hehe :)

Anyway, i decided to take it around to local garages and the like to see what they thought, one sat in the car, reved and tried pulling off in 5th..(which moved it slightly) then stank like clutch after. He then said that its probably a gearbox issue....

Garage number 2.. He actually drove it and all was well, but again he said it could be gearbox as the reverse gear still engages and seletcs all gears when stationary. Apparently if it doesnt then its clutch related?? (Im not a mechanic so feel free to shed any light) lol .

Anyways, after that and a final drive home all was fine, untill i discovered that accelerating doesnt move the car anymore. lol. the revs get higher and it sort of doesnt move much. Lol is the actuall problem in the gearbox, or could it be clutch?? Or is the clutch now slipping after the first garages 5th gear antics? Coinsidence maybe??
Do i risk just changing the clutch and pray its fine again or do i get a gearbox rebuild aswell??? Aaaaaaaaaarghh

Hope all of above makes sense to someone else, many thanks,
Janes. :)

Sounds like your gearbox. Do you have any specialist garages near you that could check it out?

Gloster road gearboxes in bristol or one other abit nearer in burtle, Im based in somerset btw. So a gearbox would act like a clutch slipping? Bugger. Lol i know its not going to be cheap. Honda wanted nearly £800 just to change a clutch! without bearing.! told them where to go. Thought id check anyway. :)

I remember someone else posting with similar symptoms a couple months back. May be worth trying to find it if you can but it sounds as though it could be selector related. Not sure if that can be checked without the labour of taking the whole lot out. I'm sure someone on here will be able to confirm

I think garage 2 method checks the selector as being ok.

IMO, most likely candidate is clutch, but could also be a syncro issue. There's a guide by VT-Doo for adjusting the clutch which you could try?.

Or a phone call to TGM and explain, though I believe Tom is currently away.

Edit: But then if you're loosing drive it's going to be the clutch!

To me it seems as if it could be clutch/ gearbox/ or selector. Lol its deffinately slipping, just gone back out in it. But then dodgy second to me says syncro, amd then the third which says it all really... Struggling to "select" when cold. Lol all of which require a minimum of getting inside the box. Thats the annoying pricey bit but hey ho. Thanks for the help guys, ill try TGM tomorrow, only thing is its abit far, and dont think ill risk driving there in it. Think ill end up going for the works just for peice of mind, but really didnt want to after xmas. Haha

Adjusting clutch might help for a short while, but the clutch is worn theres no doubt. Change clutch first, and if you still get probs then look at rebuilding gearbox.

I had simular issues with crunching gears and smelling of clutch at high rpm, i just fitted a oem clutch and it solved everything.

Personally I would book it in with TGM to get a new clutch fitted. You don't want the same thing as what Dave had with replacing the flywheel as well. Get it checked by Tom, he knows these cars and has the bits in stock. Nice drive too!

Im guessing its going to be a few days to get it all checked over and refitted though... Its going to be hard for me to actually get there, and back again, to then get go back to get it and come back, if that makes sense. dont have time off now until feb. :( and then cost, thats my only thoughts on going there. I know its going to be pricey, im not denying that. Ill have to call him tomorrow and see what he suggests. Thanks so far chaps. :)

Just looking at it on good ol google maps, does look ok and pretty easy for me to get to. And they are enthusiasts, not your average joe, that'll do attitude.
Im just fussy where she goes thats all, and these guys havnt really had bad reviews in fairness...

Take it to Honda and you will pay more. If you take it to Tom he will do it in a matter of hours. Kick back and have a cuppa. I'm sure Tom will give the car a once over too. Give them a ring Monday. Better sooner than later.

I have been going to TGM for years and it's not local to me. There isn't anything Tom doesn't know to do with Hondas (I even take the merc there too). Some people even make 6hr round trips to get work done there ;)

Good way to test for slipping is to select a higher gear such as 5th or 6th when going relatively slow i.e. 30/40mph

Floor the car and if it revs up but the car doesn't go anywhere fast then it's the clutch. will get worse so better changing it.
