To bung, or not to bung?

I remember reading in a post somewhere (yes i've tried search but i'm shite so couldn't find) that if you buy an aftermarket exhaust with a removable bung/silencer that goes in the backbox, if you keep it in all the time it could mess things up :| Could anyone tell me why or what it does harmfull :?:

if a company makes an exhaust and sells it with a bung it will be fine to use it else they wouldnt do it? i can think of no reason why it should be bad, think it was just people posting ill informed comments

I don't see the problem tbh. The bung will restrict gas flow a bit but I can't see that doing any damage, it'll just run a bit richer.
