Anyone heard of Toda cams breaking in half when actually fitted in the engine ?

A mate of mine has had the inlet cam on Toda A2's break...

anything can break, especially if fitted incorrectly or past their sell by date, things like this can happen when second hand parts are fitted combined with new parts (ie second hand cams but new valvetrain) as they are not worn together.

many performance parts especially some parts from people like Toda are designed for race use only. what this means is they are not expected to last with out very
regular service or replacement,

The cams have supposedly not done many miles in the previous engine and was being built up with new valve springs...

When setting up the timing with an adjustable cam gear it broke clean in half but there was no visual signs of hair line cracks or anything on the cam so somewhat frustrating really

There was recently a thread on Civinfo about a TODA cam defect in an FD2. TDI South changed it free of charge with TODA replacing the faulty part.

Only if the engine was run, but it sounds like it snapped whilst being fitted. Happened to me with a Skunk2 Pro2 cam when torquing the cam caps down in my DC2, was down to me not fitting it with enough care. £200 later lesson learned, I was lucky to get a single cam at all!

Thats good to know but only probs is they are 2nd hand and not knowing the history of the previous engine are they really going to exchange it??
Unlikely I'd say...

No the engine wasn't run, happened while timing up..

Gutted for you...

As you have said, without proof of purchase I doubt they will exchange them?!?

Toda won't change the cam due to it not been new..

Pic of the break on the inlet cam

Sam at TDI South recons the reason for the break is that when the cams were taken out of the previous engine the bolts wern't taken out in sequence an more than likely undone from one end an due to the pressure of the valve springs it probably tried to bend the cam, and then when re-fitted soon as the cam was put under pressure it broke due to them been made from cast instead of steal..

So its another set of Toda cams or maybe Brian Cower, has anyone ever used Brian Cower cams in a K20 engine??

You can buy inlet / exhaust cams seperately from toda, you may not need to buy a pair.

My current cams are cut from Brian Crower 8620 billet blanks, 6k miles of abuse, making good power.

Sorry yes I meant a Toda cam or a set of Brian Crower that are only a little more for a pair than just an inlet Toda cam !!
