Voltmeter - Installation

Hi every one,

I have bought a digital voltmeter, and not wanting to route the wires through bulkhead to the battery, can I just wire this directly to the back for the cigarette lighter?
- Will this show me volts increase when engine off to running - So I know alternator is charging the battery?

Connect to anything that's 12v and it'll give you the reading your after.
