Why did you choose and buy the DC5 Integra Type R?

Hi Guys,

Don't know if this has been done before but I could not find it so as I am in the market for a new car, I am an ex owner of the following and more I was wondering what the reasons were behind you buying your DC5's and also what you think of them as cars for general day to day use. Also what other cars were in the choices when you bought the DC5 and what made you choose the 5 over them?

Few of my old cars:

DC2 Type R
2 x Pulsar GTI-R's
EVO 6 GSR
2 x R33 GTR V-spec Skylines
GT4 ST185
Lancia Delta HF
and quite a few more lol...

Will look forward to your replies ;-)

My own reason was because I asked the insurance company for a quote and they gave me a really good one, I wasn't expecting it at all. I was expected to be told that 'we don't insure that type of car' but I was surprised really when I found out it wasn't going to be overly expensive over my current BMW.

It was within price range at the time and I just bit the bullet. I always liked the shape/styling of the DC5, the reliability of the Honda brand and the K20 engine really made me want one.

I had a Pulsar VZR before the BMW which I loved and still have, well, the girl friend drives it at the moment but no biggy! I wanted a change and pretty much nothing on the market tickled my fancy, evo's and scoobys are a dime a dozen plus running costs and reliability issues made me steer clear.

The DC5 just kind of fitted into the category of something I wanted, rare (enough at the time), fast, reliable, not economical but I mean, it's not that bad and it's basically a car I've always wanted.

My first thoughts when I sat in one was, wow, there's nothing here, I came from a BMW loaded to the brim full of extras, buttons and displays and everything everywhere, but the Integra had a different feel, straight up, focus on the driving experience, none of this buttons on the steering wheel and a hundred million different settings for your air con/seat. It was perfect. The BMW took away from my driving pleasure, on the motorway, just hit the cruise control button and that's it, whereas with the DC5, it's completely calling for you to drive it on, handling is superb, out on track it's a different animal and when VTEC kicks in (y0!) it's something else. Still brings a smile to my face today.

As for other cars I looked at, at the time, none really, some thoughts did go through my head.. including..

180/200sx rear wheel drive turbo power.. tempted but hard to find a clean one that wasn't ragged at the local crossroads to within an inch of its life
BMW 325/328/330/M3 after changing from the Pulsar to an E46 318 Coupe I really just didn't want to stomach another BMW, plus the price of the M3 and I'm sure the insurance of have been a barrier to me getting my hands on one
Toyota Altezza.. rear wheel drive fun and the bottom falling out of the market made these very very affordable, but they're gaining a growing reputation over here as the new AE86, I know the Champ White, Red H's and the Type R badge on the back of the DC5 don't do me any favours, but the Altezza seemed slow, heavy and just too dull.

Rare, K20A engine, handling and love the looks, both exterior and interior for me.
Everyday use was fine for me. Although it's now a 'weekend' car, I was making a 280 mile trip to Newcastle a week, driving everyday there and then making the 280 mile return trip home on a Friday (I did need my stereo though!).

At the time I was considering quite a few cars but wasn't really in the 'committed' frame of mind until the Teg I got came up on the market and started calling to me so to speak
Anyway the cars I was thinking about were:

- S2K
- 350z
- JCW Mini Cooper S
- BMW 530i (I'm an old man at heart)

I too had always loved the looks inside and out, as said above - once i could get insured for a reasonable amount i knew i would have one. Going to Le Mans in a friend's DC5 last year just sealed the deal for me and i bought one as soon as i got back.

The engine is fantastic (and decently tunable), they're reliable, cheap to run and maintain for the all-round performance on offer and they're a pretty rare sight on the road. Also they're fairly practical and have a decent sized boot if you need to shift anything.

First post! ha ha

Ive recently just sold my UK DC2 and will be on the look out for a DC5 soon!

I want something newer than the DC2 and cars I did consider were the likes of Astra VXR, Leon Cupra, Celica GT but I dont think any have the same character or all round performance as the integra!

been dreaming of one for 3 years,
prices crashed down in the last year,
found myself with the cash.

The DC5 is just so much more interesting than most cars. It seems to be a jack of all trades, master of most :D

The main reason i got mine was because i was discussing potential new cars at work and one of the boys said he knew of a DC5 for sale locally. Upped my budget a bit (loan from Mother) and went and seen it and bought it days later!

Was at first planning either a Mk4 Astra GSi or an EP3, but then one of my mates got a GSi and another got an EP3, so i was then thinking about a Megane 225 or something, but then when the idea of the DC5 cropped up i went for that as it's so reliable, nicer looking and just a much better car in my opinion than a Megane 225.

Also like the fact that they are quite rare, i like cars that dont crop up too often. Had a white S2 106 Rallye before this, was something like 200 of them in this country so it was quite rare too!

Would love another Honda after this, maybe an S2K but would rather an FD2. Shame Honda didn't make the FD2 in 3 door though, and with a bit more power, maybe 250bhp as standard.

well..back in 2001/2 i went to some jap import specialist and saw 3xdc5 was there, CW,NHB and the blue all were Brand new.. i thought, wow i ve got to have 1 one day ,looks Fab. But i think it cost £22000 at time, couldn't afford it so, i carry on with my belove MR2 until got rusty and sold it...thanks to the recession, on 2009 Jan, i got my CW at a very resonable price =D> i said to myself yesss i finally got one, even after 7 yrs, still looks and drive Fab,+not outdated at all. Another good thing about dc5 is how well the value it hold...and of course how reliable it is, shame i don't drive it often enough, my car only done 400 miles this year..

1) 9 years ago i seen a Blue 51 plate dc5 with white wheels love at first sight .
2)Prob the best looking coupe of all time.
3)I had never been able to drive until i drove my own after reading the hype and looking on youtubeto see what they could do.
4)Honda engines are rocket science, relolutionary, reliable, rev heads.
5)Who else makes a road going touring car and everday commuter.

Honda rocks.

The dude i bought mine off for €9350 (February 2010) showed a receipt from the dealer where he bought it (Northside autos) in September 2008. He paid €21,500 for it. It was Grade 5 with really low genuine mileage.... Most of the ones for sale in ireland are clocked... it's obvious from the wear and tear on them, relative to the mileage...

I has problems with my car about 4 years ago so looked up most reliable cars which of course led to jap, then when i looked further the DC5 was in the top 5 on one of the sites. Liked the car ever since but couldnt afford one at the time. A year or so later spotted e NHB one at a clio meet of all places  Since then i decided i will get one no matter what :)

Always loved honda! when i finally got out of uni and got a job, i knew i was getting one asap! Great performance, great looks and rare. Offer virtually no drawbacks considering the performance, just like running a regular car. you dont have to worry about £800 services every time you put it in the garage!

Have driven many other cars since and am delighted that i went for a dc5.....

From the first time I saw pics of the DC5 around 2002 I wanted one, at the time they were in short supply and expensive to get hold of. I was also a bit skeptical about owning an import. I decided to buy a 30th anniversary EP3 new, loved everything about it apart from the shape, lets face it it's not a pretty as the DC5.

In 2007 i decided that I had to have one so sold the EP3 and did the deal. On balance it was a good decision my only regret is i didn't spend more time looking for the newest best priced one around, I needed a car asap.

I have thought about selling the DC5 recently but there is NOTHING that comes close to the package of the DC5! Performance, handling, standard spec, running costs inc tax and insurance, reliability, grin factor, looks the list goes on.

The only 2 cars i have seriously considered are the FD2 and AP2 S2000 GT. The FD2 has the same problem as the EP3 it just doesn't look very nice, all i can see it the hybrid even with the body kit and brembos etc. The S2000 is not practical it is really a week end toy and I don't have the money for 2 cars, Tax and insurance are near on twice the cost!!!!

So I'm sticking with the DC5 for now until something is released that compares.
