Winter scrappers

Hey folks, i'm looking to buy a winter car to avoid taking mine out on the bad/wet days as the thought of all that salt and grit is making me cringe, also worried about numpties who don't know how to drive in snow/ice having a bit of bumper car bashy with me, i'll still be running my Teg on dry days and ticking his engine over every day

I'm on a limited budget, found a great car for £500 but insuring it for a decent price is seemingly impossible

Details of the car in question is a 2000 reg 2.0 Honda Accord VTEC SE, no mods, engine immobiliser. I've actually managed to get a cheaper quote for this than most 1.2 cars of the same value so the appeal is the reliability of the engine (and it has FSH and no previous MOT advisories)

2 years ncb, 4 years driving, female, parked on street, I'm only after third party fire and theft with no added 'extras', will accrue less than 4000 miles a year

I appreciate there are so many factors in insuring cars, and the actual value is not the be all and end all, but the lowest quote i've managed is £510 with admiral, everywhere else is quoting £800-900 + (£1500 in one case!)

I've tried Brentacre, Greenlight (won't insure non-modded cars), admiral, direct line, sainsburys, aviva, LV, elephant, more than, and quinn direct

My question is, is there anywhere left to try that you've insured your winter runabout with and for cheaper than what i'm getting? or do I just need to bite the bullet and pay the £42 a month (ish)?

Thanks :)

I think you'll have to bite the bullet TBH as I imagine you'll be using your NCB on the teg.

I've got 2 cars, I've got a 306 HDI which I use to get to work and back in which is brilliant because I don't care about where I park it and it seems to run on fresh air. I pay £28 a month to insure it and use my 7 years NCB on this.

I paid £500 to insure my teg and as I'd got another car greenlight allowed me to mirror the NCB on my 306 onto the new policy.

I worked out that even when factoring in insurance tax and MOT having 2 cars still works out cheaper for me.

Only real downside is I don't get to drive the teg everyday.

All my quotes were quoting 2years ncb- I assumed you could use these over two policies as Brentacre allowed me? :(

Usually, you can only use one lot of NCB on one car but there are introductory discounts on offer for second cars :)

No you can't. Certain companies (brentachre, greenlight, sky etc) will mirror no claims (so give you a similar discount without applying no claims bonus) but the mainstream insurers won't do this. You can only actually use your NCB on one Vehicle at a time.

Unfortunately in my experience the specialist insurers are usually very expensive for normal cars.

Ahh I see, looks like Brentacre may be my best bet then, i'll try Prestige after work as my last choice, just tried AA and was offered a generous third party quote of £2500, would like to tell them where to go with that one :xMoon:

Yes-Brentacre, as I say I just wanted to see if there was an alternative as they tend to specialise in modified etc. but it seems if they mirror my NCB then I won't get cheaper elsewhere

Not sure about your insurance, but don't start the car just to leave it idling for a bit. If you're leaving it for weeks on end it would probably be best to connect a battery charger to it for a few hours every couple of weeks.

Starting it and not driving it will do more harm than good.

Thanks Riz, I should have stated I meant drive as well won't just be idling but agree and appreciate the advice :)

Prestige quoted £1500, more than my Integra lol :(

So sticking with Brentacre it is! On the plus side viewed car today and she's in good nick so looks like I have my salt and grit warrior

Cheers, you quoted £60 more than Brentacre and mirrored my NCB which is pretty good tbh :) much better than all the other insane quotes i've had today, will be sure to try you next year on the DC5 and my next winter car
