i've got a 1.6 civic ep2 sport with a Type R kit fitted so looks like an EP3. Cost me 2k, only done 85k miles and going to be selling it soon.

Mini Cooper (Mrs has one and they are great, just make sure the coolant system has been dealt with at some point, for £3k you might need a slightly higher mileage one)

What choices are there if you want excellent mpg and cheap insurance and car tax?

Toyota Aygo, Fiesta 1.6tdci, small engined cars. Id avoid anything with a bigger diesel engine if you dont do the miles and just potter around town. Still getting over the fuel i put in my 3.0tdi every week, really pointless for my mileage

I've got a Mk4 Golf PD130 at the moment, It's boring, but it's nippy enough for daily duties and MPG is the best I've ever had out of a car.

Best I've seen 66mpg, Worst 42mpg (Fully loaded, raping it everywhere)

Yeah man can't beat a PD engine, even better with a few cheap mods. My PD130 has been running at 180+bhp for 7yrs and is at 140k miles now with no problems. Still makes 60-70mpg going to work
