Hi, I am new on this site and a beginner on integra's there for I need some advice on my integra type r.
I have been told my crankshaft has been burnt and damaged due to wrong engine oil being put in.
How much will a new crankshaft cost and where can i find one?

that sounds a little odd, what is exactly damaged?
what oil had been used?

Basically all i have been told is that my cranshaft has been completely damaged as it has all been burnt because instead of a 10.60 oil being put in there a 10.40 oil was put in instead. I have been given quote on how much a making a new crankshaft for my 1997 integra will cost which is £1400 but im no expert but tht seems very unusual.

I think you have been told a Lie :!:

If you are concerned still, have another place check the car over. If you let members know where you are... I'm sure 'one' of them / us, will recommend a place to go.

The only problem is my car is in the garage. I originally took it to this garage just over two months ago as my car had broken down right outside it and that was the closest garage to where I was. The mechanic told me that my engine had died and said he would have to take it apart and rebuild it. He sounded very truthful so I left it with him to repair. He took one month to do this before I got it back costing me £1200 with what he said was a rebuilt engine which he said he tuned to do maximum 325bhp. He then said after 500miles the car would need to be brought back for oil change. However it was not convenient for me to take it back to him there for I took it to my friends garage who put in the 10.40 engine oil instead of 10.60 and said it would be fine as long as there is oil in there.
Less than a month after the “Rebuilt” engine it broke down again in the same way so I
took it back to the mechanic who did the engine job. He has now had my car for over 5 weeks with the engine on the floor taken apart and for 5 weeks he has been saying it‘s the crankshaft due to the 10.40 oil burning it and says he is having one made especially for my car as it needs to be a customised one. He is not willing to sign any statements confirming that all this is the case and has been telling me all this time I will not have to pay nothing. But now he is saying that the crankshaft has been built from his engineerers and I will have to pay £1400 for it otherwise he will confiscate my car.
As I said I am no expert but this does not seem to fit.

I am located in east London forest gate. I appreciate all advice and help being given to me here.

Yeah, please tell me this is a wind up cause if not mate, I really really feel sorry for you. You're getting bent over backwards and raped by the sounds of things.

I'd never let anyone whom I didn't know near my car, I trust one or two mechanics and both are friends so I trust their work. I'm using 10 40 in my 5 with no problems. On to trading standards with you.

10w60 is not even the correct Viscosity for the car - if you look at the owners manual it states - 0-40, 5-30 -5-40, 10-40 are all fine. report to trading standards your getting ripped off big time. Why would they need to make a custom crankshaft anyway im sure you can get them as they are.

The mechanic told me that he needed to put 10.60 because he tuned the engine to have 325BHP. He said because i had a 10.40 put in it has made the oil go from the pistons to the wrong side on to the crankshaft and completely burnt it.

I have been told that it is impossible for a 97 inergra type r to do as much as 325BHP even on a super charged integra engine. He says he is not charging me labour but only charging me £1400 for the customised crankshaft. I have seen loads advertised on ebay for honda crankshafts but he said they cant be used.

I am positive now that he is playing me which is why he was not willing to sign any statments.

Thank you for your replies....I will definetily be reporting him to trading standards now. As i am now starting to believe that there never was anything wrong with my crankshaft and he is making that up as he must have done the job wrong on my engine the first time round.

1400 sounds too much too me from the sencond he said.

Thanks again to all

I ran a B series engine for 5 years on 10-40, not a problem!!

You are being ripped off, there probably wasn't a big problem with your car in the first place, probably a failed distributor or something simple and relatively cheap/easy to fix!! And 325bhp N/A for £1200, now that is just daft!!

What's this place called?

5w-40 and 10w-40 is the perfect oil for the b series engine.

And crank just don't get damaged like this, yes the crack bearing and big end might be damaged but not the crank.

I think your car probably just had a very small problem, nothing is too difficult to fix on a B series ;)

For the money you have already paid, you can get yourself a pretty nice low mileage 2nd hand B18C type R engine.

Would suggest you take the car back asap from that cowboy.

There is something to be learned by everyone from this.

We ALWAYS give a full written Quotation for tangible parts and labour, and an estimate for things we cant see, this should always be asked for before any work starts, and on paper.
unforseen repairs that appear should be agreed by the customer before any extra work starts.

Yes I agree

But with my situation he had been telling me all along that he would not charge me as the car should have not developed another problem with in a month of his forst repair. But at the end he says he is charging 1400 for a new cranksahft.

When asked to write this down and sign it he simply refused.

I have contacted Trading standards and consumer direct and they have told me as long as i can get a minimum of 3 quotes from other mechanics, garages, engineers or manufactures of how much a crankshaft should actually cost me as 1400 is obviously too much then i will only have to pay him that amount known as a reasonable price which he will have too accept.

Once I get my car back I will never be taking it back there again
