Looking to see if anyone can recommend a gearbox specialist in the Newcastle area? I need a price for the usual worn synchros plus I think the clutch bearing is getting loud.

I know its a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but what price do you think I'd be looking at? I was just going to change the oil because it's not un-drivable at the min and I don't do many miles (hence just wanting to speak to someone about price). But I also like catching and repairing problems ASAP no mater how small.

There seems to be a shortage up here Liam ha may be there's a niche.

As for staying over night, I don't want to pay the extra expenses. Watching the money for a double garage extension in the summer :xaiweb3: . Cheers for the suggestions anyway.

How do you know it's synchros? If your clutch is going then it will crunch in to gear. Especially in high revs.

TGM can do it in a day, but it'll be a long day for you, leaving very early and getting back late..

As above, TGM did mine in a day. It isnt cheap though, not when you start messing with synchros. The hub assembly with 1st to 2nd synchro is the other side of £700 for a genuine part withought installation, new secknd gear at £80, clutch added in to that as its apart, plus labour allow over the feared 4 figure sum ;) It could just be clutch like Dotty says, but like you I wanted to be sure so asked TGM to split the box and check. I had saved for the worst anyways, and he had the parts there, so I opted for the lot to be sorted out as he was in there. It was worn but not terrible, amplified by a dodgy clutch, but its fantastic now, just cost a small fortune at the time for something you cant see. :( lol Worth every penny though.

Take it to a specialist and get them to drive it. Not ideal travelling just for a test drive I know, but may help.

I've already had the clutch replaced dotty. It was suffering from the crunching symptoms etc when I got the car, thats all fine now. I'm assuming it is the synchros just because when selecting the first couple of gears it can be difficult, even from moving away from the lights (slow speed, low revs). Some times letting the clutch out and pressing it back in helps it find its place. As for the bearing noise..there is a whirring noise (not too loud) best noticed when stationary and when you press the clutch in it stops. If there is no where local that anyone has used before I think i'm going for the oil change route.... Well until I have my garage done(can't wait!!!) :xaiweb2:

I look forward to hearing the outcome of this one as I have a whirring sound when sitting idle which goes when the clutch pedal is pressed down and have been told so many diffident things from different "mechanics" as to what it is. I don't have stiff or crunchy gears though.

If noise goes away when clutch pedal is pressed that's very easy answer clutch release bearing 100%

They all make a slight wirhing noise when on idle without the pedal depressed mind. Nothing loud, just a noticable change when pedal is depressed.

Any local teg owners who you can compare yours with mate?

There are a few 'oop North.

As James has said, they do make a slight whirring noise on idle. But it does sound like your having selector issues. Are you running a standard air box? If not, some aftermarket ones can stop the cables from moving as they should underneath the air box. If 1st and 2nd are notchy then I would say that the synchro's have gone.

First try new gearbox oil. MTF3 from Honda will do. 2 litres.

Check cables for clearance.

Check engine mounts.

Then, I would take it somewhere to get it looked at.

Thanks for the reply's. Was confident the whirring was the release bearing. I haven't compared it with another Teg (haven't met anyone up here yet) but my mates EP3 is no where near as loud and it has similar miles. Wouldn't be much point in getting one done without them looking at the synchro's.

Adam, I've got a Injen cia, so its well clear. I've also had all engine mounts replaced about 1000miles ago(mmmmmugen ones). Next step will defiantly be the oil. Can you suggest anyone specifically that could look at it all the way oop hheeeaaaarr? Would like a garage that someone has had good experiences dealing with.

Teegwa and Coconat are the only two people I know that might be able to help. (Sorry to name drop guys!)

Gearbox oil you can change on your drive. But you will need a big Allen key to remove the bolt!

Give it a week or so with the new oil. When they changed the clutch they should have done the oil at the same time really.

Tgm is a trek and a half from Newcastle.

Gerry at performance tek gets my vote. He's in Glasgow. If not him then tdi north??

If your sure it's the box and you take it off the guy at Just Diesels in blaydon is the man for gearboxes. Can't remember his name though.

Might be terry ?

I'd take it to Stevie at Grinspeed. He has experience of Jap cars and Honda 's in particular as he used to work for TDI North, he's also an ex Ford M Sport mechanic so knows his stuff. May cost you a bit more than other places but then again it's quite a big job.
